Man Chased by Eagle
While taking home peats near Lev
erburgh, Scotland, recently, John
Kerr was chased by an eagle. When
the large bird began to hover above
him, as if ready to strike, Kerr shout
ed at the top of his voice to frighten
it, but the eagle came nearer and
continued to follow him for a con
siderable distance, Kerr took refuge
behind a peat stack and watched the
bird’s efforts to locate him, It failed
to do so, and finally soared high and
disappeared. As it is the first eagle
seen in that part of the country for
40 years, residents are watching for
it with the hopes of bagging it as a
souvenir,
Spain Yields War Trophies
Spain has demonstrated its effusive
friendship for its emancipated former
dominions by voluntarily surrender
ing to Cuba flags, banners, pistols,
swords and other war trophies cap
tured by the Spanish troops from the
Cuban rebels, Prominent among these
emblems is the banner of independ
ence raised by Carlos Maria Ces
pedes, the great patriot, during the
ten years' war in 1868, The trophies
figured for many years in the Artil
lery museum at Madrid. Senor Gareia
Kholy, Cuban ambassador, gave an en
tertainment at which these emblems
were exhibited before being sent to
Cuba, Spanish pride is certainly mak
ing concessions in order to secure the
good will of Cuba.

SHARK FIGHT WHA&E
Describes Thrilling Encounter
Off British Columbia.
e -
Winnipeg.—A thrilling battle be
tween a big black whale and a giant
fox shark was witnessed near Pender
Harbor, B, C., by Horace Williamson,
a rancher. The result of the contest
could not be ascertained, as the com
batants battled their way out of sight,
while both appeared to be preparé'd
for a long fight. R
Williamson noticed white water
ahead while navigating his gas boat
toward Garrow Point. Knowing that
there were no rocks in that vicinity,
the spectacle aroused his curiosity
and he steered for it. 4
As he got nearer he saw the back
of a whale rise from the surface ®n
til four and a half feet were exposed.
Just as he started to emme his jour
ney he noticed the square jesvs of a
fox shark break water near the whale.
Then the fight began. The shark, ap
parently six feet broad at the shoul
ders, had arched out of the water over
the back of the whale, slashing at the
massive creature with his tail. Sem
times it repeated the attack wi
300 feet of the spot where Williamson
sat in his small boat.
“1 have seen wolf fish, sharks, and
whales In British Columbia waters
many times and I could not have been
deceived,” said Williamson, after re
lating his experience, “The shark
must have been nearly forty feet long,
tapering to thin tail from its massive
shoulders. The fight was something
which I have never seen before and
probably I shall never see again.”
Wife, With Black Eyes,
Balks at Jail for Uv
Detroit—A wife has a right to
Jeet when a husband fails to turn “over
his entire pay to her, and the husbhand
has no right to use physical violence
when the wife fails to -prepare his
breakfast, Judge Christopher I, Stein
ruled,
This decision was reached when
Walter Rokosz, thirty-three, was
brought into Recorder's court on an
assault and battery charge preferred
by his wife, Mrs. Agnes Rokosz ap
peared in court with two black eyes
which she said her husband had in
flicted,
According to the testimony, the hus
band failed to give his wife his entire
pay, and an argument followed. The
next morning the wife failed to get up
to prepare his breakfast, and the ar
gument broke into a fight.
After Judge Stein heard the testi
mony his comments were restricted
to the sentence of S3O fine and costs,
or sixty days In jail. Rokosz imme
diately was sent to serve the sixty
days.
“I don't want him to go to jail,” the
wife said, Judge Stein reconsidered,
had the prisoner brought back from
the bullpen, and changed the sentence
to six months' probation.
Dog Hangs Self Trying
to Escape From Cell
Chicago.—~*Death following a chase
of a Maltese eat up a tree,” reads the
sergeant’s report accounting for the
disappearance of Boze from a cell in
the Hyde Park police station,
Boze, a fluffy Spitz, was given po
lice escort to the dog pen at the sta
tion after being found barking at the
foot of an elm at his erying quarry
high up on a branch, The cell already
had three canine occupants, Boze was
not an ordinary dog. His home faced
one of the best avenues in the silk
stocking district, And now, to be
locked up with common prowlers !
Such company was too much for
Boge. He high-hatted them on the
street, why not here? The leash quite
long, Boze leaped to the window sill
of the cell, From here he could wateh
the outside world moving, It looked
inviting, There was a clear coast. He
Jumped—, DBut the leash which kept
him tied to a bar of the cell would not
