Overgrazing of Pastures
Forced Animais to Eat
I Inferior Plants.
(Prepared by the United States Department
of Agriculture.)
' Conservative grazing, which assures
i an abundant supply of natritious
| range forage, Is an important factor
| in reducing losses of live stock from
! poisoncus plants, says the forest
service, United States Department of
Agriculture.
1 Cause of Locses.
At a recent meeting of the Inter
" mountain Live Stock Sanitary asso
| eciation Prof., C. E. Fleming of the
| University of Nevada pointed out that
1 a great many of the death losses from
| eating poisonous plants were the re
{ sult of overgrazing and depletion ot
| the better forage plants, which forced
| the live stock to eat plants of in
| ferior value—including those that are
! poisonous—in suflicient quantity to
{ prove fatal. Doctor Murray of Salt
1 Lake City also stared that in his
; opinion many losses on the winter
| range were due to malnutrition as a
l result of live stock having to subsist
| mainly on inferior range plants and
| having an inadequate forage supply.
1 Reduce Losses.
| In the drought region of southern
| Arizona it is extremely important,
: the forest service has found, to graze
| the range conservatively, since short
| rainfall may result in the production
| of a feed supply materially smaller
! than usual. It was found that by util
| izing approximately 80 per cent of
| the growth of the important palatable
| plants in the average year and by re
serving a part ¢f the grama range, on
| which the vegetation cures well on
| the stalk and is excellent winter feed,
! losses could be reduced from the av
| erage for that region of about 10 per
’ cent to about 2 to 3 per cent of the
| animals grazed. Not only is there a
direetr saving to the live-stock pro
ducer from fewer death losses, but
the better condition of animals re
sults in a greater production of young
and better development with a more
satisfactory price. Thus, profits have
been made from cattie during the re
’ cent trying years where conservative
| grazing has been practiced, although
net losses were shown by those out
tits in the region which utilized their
range forage too closely.
Get Seed Wheat Free of
Objectionable Weeds
Many wheat growers in the Corn
Belt, because of the extensive winter
killing that occurred in this area last
season, wfl#"befl:éfl%ml"a neces
sity this year of providing themselves
with seed wheat. Seed may often be
obtained fromt neighboring farmers,
but it may sometimes be necessary, or
it may appear advisable to bring in
seed from greater distances. In any
case, says the United States Depart
ment of Agriculture, the farmer should
assure himself that the wheat seed he
buys is free from weed seeds. Gar
lic, cockle, and cheat or chess are es
pecially objectionable and unfortunate
ly are widely prevalent in many wheat
growing areas, When once introduced
on a farm they are difficult to eradi
cate, and grain containing such weed
seeds is discounted on the market., A
little care in preventing the introduc
tion of noxious weeds in seed wheat
may save a lot of trouble,
Highest Grade Alfalfa
Is Marketed Profitably
A much greater quantity of high
grade alfalfa could be produced and
marketed profitably in the United
States, the United States Department
of Agriculture believes, if producers
would study market demands and
make their production and loading
practices conform to the market re
quirements, Hay dealers in all the
big alfalfa distributing markets re
ceive each year thousands of orders
for bigh-grade alfai®a ey which can
not be filled because of an insuflicient
quantity of hay of this grade. The
chief demand for baled alfalfa hay is
from dairymen, and large numbers of
them who now depend largely upon
mill feeds as sources of protein would
doubtless become buyers of alfalfa if
supplies of a high-grade hay were
available,

Dr. Caldwell watched the results of
constipation for 47 years, and believed
that no mat‘lfr how careful people are
of their health, diet and exercise, con
stipation will occur from time to time.
Of next importance, then, is how to treat
it when it comes. Dr. Caldwell always
was in favor of getting as close to nature
as possible, hence his remedy for consti
pation is a mild vegetable compound. it
can not harm the most delicate system
and is not habit forming.
The Doctor never did approve of dras
tic physics and purges. He did not believe
they were good for human beings to put
into their system. Use Syrup Pepsin for
yourself and members of the family in
constipation, biliousness, sour and crampy
stomach, bad breath, no appetite, head
aches, and to break up fevers and colds.
Get a bottle today, at any drugstore and
observe these three rules of health: Keep
the head cool, the feet warm, the bowels
open. For a free trial bottle, just write
“Syrup Pepsin,” Dept. 88, Monticello,
Illinois.

Small Boys Loyal to
Favorite Film Hero
A few weeks ago fire started in the
projection room of a moving picture
theater in Hartford, Conn, Cautious
patrons sought the nearest exists, and
firemen from three companies dasied
in prepared, as always, to do or die,
A half hour later, the fire extin
guished, the show went on. Had the
audience stayed through the excite
ment and the supposed danger? The
adults hadn’t, but the small boys who
filled the gallery when the fire began
were still there when the picture was
resumed. It was a “Western,” of
course; a rip-roaring, hard-shooting
“Western” with muscular hero, incred
ibly intelligent horse, sneering villain
and golden heroine, It was, as Steven
son said of “Treasure Island,” “all the
old romance retold exactly in the an
cient way.”
They loved it so well that danger
could not drive them away. What
would Tom Mix say if he saw a fel
low run from a little fire? Stick it
out, pard.
The Tease
The late Gov. Austin Peay of Ten
nessee was a bitter opponent of evo
lution, short skirts and bobbed hair.
At a Baptist supper in Nashville a
pretty girl tried to tease the stern
and handsome governor.
“Oh, for the days,” she said, “when
men were men!”
“And women weren't,” said he,
Chesapeake bay is said to produce
more oysters than any other body of
water in the world; it has an annual
output of nearly 8,000,000 bushels,
The smaller the fish the more it
strains the veracity of the fisherman.
