Last Sunday the pulpits in St. George |
churches were vacant and the Sunday
schools held a union meeting at the
Baptist church. A goed attendance at

Like the men with whom they worked, |

Saturcay was a hard day and thosc
who went to work knew what a fask
lay before them, that of clearing up
after the show was over, Mesdames
McDonald, C. E. Roy, B. R. King with
Mr. Hursey and Mr. Prescott. Mrs. Roy
deserves special praise for she served
a supper which was perfection of com
bined substance and daintiness to the
workers.
Mr. and Mrs. Guy H. Goriey and chil
dren, Edith and Merrill, of Orange Park
were week end visitors at St. George
being the guests of Mr. and Mrs. W.

Bill Gooden who was injured in a
motorcycle accident in Jacksonvile
some weeks ago has fully recovered
from the in'ury, it is reported.
Mr. W. T. Londeree and Joseph were
business visitors to Jacksonville Mcn
day.
Col. A. S. McQueen of Folkston was
a visitor tv St. George Monday of this
week.

Violence Against Tick Eradication
Heaps Maximum Penalty.

of guilty and imposed a penalty of '

fine against his son, Will Carter, for
conspiracy und violently interfering
with emp oyees of the Federal Bureaw
of Animal Industry in the performance
of their official duties in connection
with tick eradication. The jury's ver
dict was reached in about two hours,
and iu passing sentence, the judue iu
formed the defendants thal he was
giving them the maximum penaify. |

These cases grew out of opposition
to the work of eradicating cattle ticks
in Echols County, which resulted, dur
ing 1923, in the destruction of eattle
dmt.!g_*vsts._. burning of spraying
pens, iu‘erfering with bureau employ=-
ees in the performance of thelr work,
witth the result that one bureau agent
was killed and one seriously wounded.
Notwithstanding the well-organized

at the home of her parentsin Folkston,
the J. W. Rodgers. Mrs. Norman re
turned to her home in St.{jeorge the
eud of the weck to supervise packing
of their houschold goods and left again
the middle of the week beihg followed
later by Mr. Norman. The Normans
expect to make their future home in
Waycross where as 15 already known,
Mr. Norman has the Chrysler Agency.

Mrs. Welch’s brotuher, Mr. T. E. Rob
iison of Birmingham, Ala, is also a
member of the group ot her bedside.
Mrs. Britt Lovd a former resident of
St. George, died at her home in Jack
sonvilie on Tuesday of last week anu
was brought to a nearby cemetery for
purial. It is understood that Mrs.
Loyd's death was unexpected. Her
family and nomerous relatives in this
section have the syvmpathy of thexri
friends in her loss. | ‘
A party of young pevple including
Misses Eleanor and Gladys Cockrell,
Miss Jane Quarterman, Messrs. Arthur
Barker and Justin Cockrell motored to
M:Clehney and Glen St. Mary Sunday.
