A PLANK OR SO IN OUR PLATFORM
Just so as to diversify the uufortunate political thought of the
present day, the Herald believes the setting forth of a few of the
fundamental things of interest and bettering of the community life
on which right thinking men may agree, We take it for gran
ted that the tax payer begrudges the dollar paid many times for
the «imply reason he knows not where it went; i's accomplish.
mente, benefit or creation of a valuable asset so his government
that brings back to its citizenship a revenue in either enforcement
of the law, the protection of its pecpe, or a convenience tu them
in the pursuit of knowledge, health, business or happiness,
Primavily we all must agree, though we must confess, that
some have their donbts of it, that auniform education and health
system 1s aecessary; il must be so syslematic as to become cunta
ticus-—so every one will “caleh it,” and like it, just as they now
dread “taking” something that afflicts the one infected. Para
mount to communily progress are th. se two, the basis you might
say, of every thing worth while, Without health the enjoyment
oi life is limited, withou* knowledge Ihe appreciation of the finer
things of life can not be realized. S 0 with these we begin build
tor the future years to ccme,
Next on the program, as a matter of course, must be the way
and means of “coming and going.” Every since those eventfu]
days back in 1914, when saudy were the roads on dry days, and
swollen were lie streams 1n wet weather; and the pussing of the
' woe=be god” was essured, and the “tin lizzie” was hailed as the
means of being able to go fifteen miles per aour, including balking
and cranking up, we have had it seriously in our minds that it was
a duty and u pleasuse, 10 boust fur guud roads In and cut of
8 usun our voice has been raised for them. Progress has been
wounderful, though to us the need and desire, has outdistanced the
accomplishments, yet how great has been the change, from the
everlasting pleading, and argument for Highways, it is now ac
knowledged to be “a neccesity of life,” and the means to an end
loung o acconpiish vur desire, "Pay-as-you-go” has become
vhrviele, Keaihonest 1o goodness hara surfaced roads are being
demanded, and temporary construction scorned., The narrow
way hus given way to the broad gauge. And a snail pace is con
sidered the speed of a dozen years azo.
* Several organizations have polled our representatives and
our senators, We see new adherents to a common cause, but
tiey are putting thorns on our ruses. We are peeved. they of
fer us a mess of pottage for help in building their “main highway,”
by promi;ing us a refund of hond money, but insert a clause to
help themselves first then if left, to give us a “hand out” We
boys in the ' ackwoods don’t want any idle promises, we ure tired
of second helpings, we want a finger in the first pie. Oh, yes
we undertand that we are not big tax payers, don’t travel as far as
big owners do, but as the gas tax is to wurn the trick, we use it in
our little Fords and want to go as far the other fellow on a gallon
of gas. And hear us our vote counts as much as yours. We
have that objection to Senator Myrick’s plan. Give us our bond
money back for our country roads and we are with you tooth and
nail. We wunt what we need to get contacl. Let’s play the
game fair and square—then brother couunt Charlton in with you.
Now we 2onfess that the next thing on our mind is water.
We admi! we por mor kick in the recent episode out of the dis

But it is and will te the saving grace of Charlton? After our ex
parience of the past yesr who would doubt that jt is the one bg
fictor it the march of progress Charlton to an agricultural success,
" Mr. Guy Dean, of the firm of Dean & Gowan, read a letier at
the Chamber of Comm ree meeting, Monday night, showing the
attitude his firm had taken on the bus vs railroad transportation,
33 far as their patronage was coneered. It was insiructions to
wholesalers to “always use the railroads in shipping their goods,"”
Cl arly he set for'h his resons, thatithe bus line paid us no reve
nie, while the tnlroads pud slimost half of our taxes, some twen
ty o more funities lived here, paid taxes, and traded with Lome
merceaals We commend warmly that attitude and admonish
our merchant that it is not wise to even throw stones at the “goose
that lays the goiden egg” For ovr part we stand by those that
help us~the ruilroads. Think 'his oyer brother.
Work that stand our as splendid and noble is that kind that
tends to brighten the lives pf those that come into the world ag
mentally defective, and the Augusta Chronical speaks editorially of
the work of De. 4 W. Oden, “"who hae, within approximately two
years, increased the number of children from b 4 to 140, or almost
300 per cent, and hopes 10 increase 'he number 10 175 within the
year with the same maintenance anpropriation, and the furlher
fact that these children show evidences of kind and considergte
treatment, are neal and well fed and are taugnt everything that
their little minds will allow them to recelve, is one of the most
remarkable stories in toe history of wny state’s eleemosynary
institutions.” e G AOO R

The new Ford
has a very simple and
effective
lubrication system
THE lubrication system for
the engine of the new Ford
is as simple in principle as
waler running gnwn-hill.
A gear pump in the bot.
tom of the oil pan raises the
oil to the valve chamber
reservoir. From here it
flows on to the main crank
shaft bearings and the front
camshaft bearing. Overflow
oil drops into the oil pan
tray and runs into troughs
through which the connect
ing rods pass.
As the ends of these rods
strike the oil they scoop up:
a supply for the connecting
rod bearing. At the same
time they set up a fine spray
that lubricates the pistons
and other moving parts.
From the tray the oil runs
into the bottom of the pan,
and is again drawn up
through a fine mesh screen
and nunped to the valve
chamber,
This system is so effective
that the five-quart contents
of the oil pan pass through
the pump twice in every
mile when you are traveling
at only 30 miles an hour,
Yet there is only one
movable part —the
oil pump,

As a matter of fact, the
lubrication system for the
new Ford is'so simple in de
sign and so carefully made
that it requires practically
no serviece atiention.
There is just: one thing
for you to do, but it is m
important thing .. .
the oil! Change the oil
every 500 miles and be sure
the indicator rod never reg
isters below low (L),
If the oil level is allowed
to fall below low, the supply
becomes insufficient to oil
all parts as they should be
oiled.
To insure best perform
ance it is also advisable to
have the chassis of your car
lubricated every 500 miles.
This has been made easy
in the new Ford through the
use of the high pressure
grease gun system,
