With present tax he says he could then pave 5700 miles of the present 6,308 miles of state highway system, . show that tueir hearts were in the right place the Citrus Growers of Florida contributed ‘v vis v Riape lrait to northern vitles effected with influenza, which were sent to cities for dis tribution, At the price of the frait this season everybody should eat plenty to stave off the flu. —— An air mail pilot has discovered a new use for his machine. Charlton farmers who plan now 10 include a big velvet bean patch are mhking the right plan. Saw a check the other day held by a farmer who had used uis field all winter for his own milk cow and bogs, then sold it to a slockmen as a pastare for his stock, Folkston’s future is greater than most people thinks, for the beliv ers init, show by their action we are to have a “greater Folkston”. The new Post Office quarters pre sents the appearance of whit would do justice 1o a city of five thousand people, That means real progress Lenox aedicated its consolidated school tuilding last Monday, It it a modern and beautiful structure and proves that advancin, thoughts) of today are that ow :hildren shall have the best ap ortunity ror education. Now if they will all take aavantage R these opportunities and improve tnat opportunity all will be well i When people of a community lan for the future then it is eas i:r enough to build ‘o them, We ire reminded of what some of our yeople said about scl.ool buildings —build for the future. Alrendy it is proven that our sights were not as great as we thought, ancth v yvear or so of growth, will take up all the slack and require more room, Now comes a paper published (1 Dansville, 111.. made out of the wlp of corn stalks. Now that the enfluenza epe demic has about spent its force. suppose that the school children aake up their minds that they Icatch up the lost time, by renewed energy lo make their grade with- Juta greater extension of time Not that the time cannot be extend od long in to the spring lime is lost to may ot our boys, and we feel that they should make the )est of their opportunity while the naking is good. Lest vou forget keep in mind that the Sest metiod of building ap your community is to see that Jour community is always repre sented in the things that means its advancement in every way—the aext thing we have in mind is the Swainshor» celebration of the opening of Federal Roule one s metimes soon showing that 90 wr cent of thal route is paved rom Maine tc Miami, Let us gel Jp a gnod delegation o let them «now Folkston is on tne map, [here seems to be an under lcurrem that our tax system must oe chunged to meet the conditions of ithe times. There is just one thing we need, that every cent of tuxes should he used to better conditlions of the people, and create their equul in resources in stead of making new liabilties. That they should be so equahzed that money made by those who own no property, should pay as much based upon the income of the owner of land from the land itsell. Whle weall bemoan taxes, they are as necessary es your daily bread, for without govern ment we should not be afree peo ple, and taxes are necessary for that government support. CHARLTON COUNTY HERALD, FOLKSTON, GEORGIA. ““A LESSON IN THRIFT” In the passing of Mr. Richard Powers, st Macclenny, Saturday, we can point to his life, as a liviug example of what is really thrift. He came in to being in this county sume 73 years ago, and was wed ded to Miss Burmsed, when a young: man, and they together )ave made the pilgrimage through ife S 0 as 1o bring credit to. the use they have “led-~industribus, saving and ‘meighborly: ' * ¢ In spesking of the departed we are want to say ihe pice things and t iz good traits of character of the d.ceased. Eut in this case we can truly speak of the man ard the opportunity that was his anc the manner of his seizing it. Mr 2owers began his life in Charito where our information telis us he ~as born, marrying at an early age, he settled down to the re sponsibilties of a pioneer life and by his industry and energy in farming, stock raising and logging amassed a fortune estimated to be in the neighbcrhood of a quaiter of a million dollars. He farmed, raised stock, turpentined and log zed. He followed a plan of pul ting his money in pine lands ol Charlton county, Georgia ana Baker county, Florida, Only & short while ago he turned Joost real estate of an amount of SIOO,OOO and when he did, he helo Hon to his Charlton county lands amounting to some ten thousanc acres of land, becuuse he statec he considered these lands bettel than the land he sold. “Dich” Powers as he was well and favorably known at tended strictly to his business iWilh him, life was a business, and timber one thing he. realized brought dividends, and in- timbe: his savings wen', Now . that he has passed over the great divide this lesson is impressed upon us by the volume of wealth he has leftbehind him. Nor does that rep resent all that he has accomplished for there is an interesting family of seven children left ag a monument of his life, beside the faithful help meet who rendered her aid in the life accomplishment of this splen did pioneer of early Charlton cour.- ty life. L He was: buried among his friends ot Macclenny, last Sunday near where he made his life’s suc cess. Peace be to your ashes “Uncle Riek”, would that muny‘ more would profit by your experi ence in uei‘g the great oppor tunities offered them. Some of the press boys are nipping at_Ex Gov. Slaton about his anti-bond atthtude. Unfortun ately what he says is largely true aboul not getting our moneys worth and being held up, but un derthe nresent method we haye the same thing to contend with. I'he Herald has a sure cure for !auch evils, Train men for the purpose vou expeet of them; make them responsible for what you set !t,hem doing and see that their ‘accomplishments are in accordance with money speat. Graft and gpecial favors must be eleminated y you would ' wish to save our Jnftm for her people, e A et The open l:tter ol Gov. Hard man to Chairman Holder, predicas téd upon the letter received from the Federal aid department seems to pus the matter right square up to Mr. Holder, to either resign are else an extra session of the legis lature would ‘be called 10 take action. It seems a pzy that a mar e der can stand up In the, face of repudiation of the m'gq ind hold on to something thet the people do not wish him to have. Oh well this is the last one he will ever hold by the grace of uppoint ment or the voice of the people. | * is a prescription for CoLDS, GRIPPE, FLU, DENGUE BILIOUS FEVER AND MALARIA It is the most speedy remedy known PO-CA-RA .
