Since May 15, it is reported,
nearly 23,000 freight cars have
come off the idle list.

Japan is making a splendid
record in pacifying Corea, pro¬
viding you don’t mind the blood¬

obscure the record.

goodness knows, since he

St Why is it”, asks the
Free Press, “that the price
beef always goes up when
fish aren’t biting”? For the
same reason that it stays
when the fish are biting.
Colonel Bryan has made
speech bitterly denouncing per
petunl franchises. Wonder
does he think of perpetual

CONTEST EXCITING
Voting Has Been Heavy Since
Our Last Issue.
CLOSES ON JULY II AT 9 P. M.
The Last Special Offer Is Made This
Week.
The Leader’s Big Subscription Popularity Contest has stead¬
ily grown more exciting since our last issue. More interest has
been manifested and voting has been heavy, and The Leader’s sub¬
scription list has grown by leaps and bounds. To win now is what
the young ladies and their friends want, and it should not be forgot¬
ten that a big vote now strengthens the faith of your friends in
your chances of winning and while they see your chances are good
they are willing to help. Here lies the secret of winning after lead we
nave i reached this stage of the game. Don’t fall behind, but
the ticket. . and
Since our last issue we have cut down the time one week
the contest will close on July 11th at 9 o’clock instead of the 18th
as previously advertised. The time is short now. It means get
votes or get left. Much can be done in that finite and any of the
young ladies who go after votes in earnest have a chance to win.
The trips are very desirable ones and well worth working for.
See next week’s Leader for particulars as to how the contest
will close. See ad in this issue for special offer, which is positively
the last one of any kind that will be made during this contest.
The vote up to 4 o’clock Thursday afternoon was as follows:

Last Saturday a young white
man giving his name as J Phillips
presented a check at the Ex¬
change Bank for $10-00, which
had been given him as his week’s
wages by Mr Geo Hartley.
After having this check cashed
Phillips present five more checks
for various amounts at the Bank,
with Mr Hartley’s name to each
of them, and made out to various
parties As the signatures of
these checks were almost idetical
with Mr Hartley’s the first four
were cashed during the usual
Saturday rush.
When the fifth check was pre¬
sented by Phillips, tnc office r&
of the Bank became suspicious
and communicated with Mi
Hartley, who pronounced the
checks forgeries. He at once had
Phillips arrested, compelled him
to pay the money he had gotten
on the checks, and placed him in
the Perry jail.
Phillips stated that his home is
in Florida' He has been work¬
ing in the packing house of Mi
Hartley’s about two weeks.
