rhe Fort Leader VOL. XIX. The Leader’s Was a Big Success Miss Baldwin and Green Won the Trips. The Leader’s Big Contest closed Saturday night 10 o’clock Avith a very finish. Saturday afternoon the last bulletin was issued, contestants were all very and no one could tell by standing who would >vin, as the young ladies were back large numbers of votes. All contestants in the first and District dropped out before the ; close except Miss Stella Glass, Miss Ettienne BaldAvin, Miss Blanch Green and Mis ss Annie Sue Johnson, of Marshallv ille. Several days ago, The Leader decided to give all the winning young ladies companions trips to Washington, instead of one to Washington and one to Biloxi ? Miss., as first advertised. When the voting closed at 10 o ’clock Saturday night, Mayor Fincher and Hon G H Haidison atced as judges, counted the votes and announced the winners. Miss Ettienne Baldwin won the companion trips in District No. 3 by a majority of 5,050 her total vote being 59,250, and that <>1 A Miss Glass bein 7~ or 64,200. In the second District. Miss Blanch Green Avon the companion trips by a majority of 9,500, her total A T ote being 35,300, and Miss Johnson receiving a total of 25,- 800. All four young ladies are to be con gratulated on their excellent race and the close finish they made. The fair manner in which the contest was conducted by The Leader from beginning to end has received the approval of all, and no complaint has been made by anyone as to the result. \ he contest has proved succes ful in every respect, as the greatly 'increased circulation of The Leader will show. Nearly every family in Houston County is now receiving this paper and our merchants are losing no time in making ad\'ertising contracts with us before our rates are ad ranee d. On Monday, The Leader turned over to Miss Baldwin and Miss Greene the necessary funds to pay the expenses of the four trips to Washington and return, This includes Railroad fare Sleeping car fare. Meals en route board for one Aveek at the hotel in ’Washington. These young ladies will leave with their companions in a few days on their delightful trips, andTm their re¬ turn, Avill write a full account of their stay at the Nation’s capital, which will be published in The Leader. The negro who gave his as John Smith and who officer Lavender a great deal trouble at Union Station day, was fined today £10 on counts, one for, drunkness the other for resisting an officer. Smith said he was a farmer and that he secured the liqnor Port Valley. F Miller’s Store Wed¬ nesday morning he could hardly push nis way in the door, so enormous was the crowd attend¬ ing the Big Scandalous Sale. Although there were extraclerks in the store they could hardly wait on the people. And the way Mr. Miller has cut prices on his goods is a wonder. Ever since the Sale started there has been a steady stream of people going in the store, all attracted by the Scandalous Sale. IT It Mr Aim on Williams of Marshall* ville was in the city Monday. Miss Nora Rountree and Mr Charlie Rountree spent Friday in Marshallville the guest of Mr and Mrs John Haslam. Miss Nora Rountree was the hostess at a water melon cutting given in honor of Misses Riley and Houser the first ofjthe week.
