STRAWBERRY GROWING
IN ALABAMA
One of the most interesting dis
cussions at the recent meeting a
Auburn of the State Horticultural
Society was on strawberry growing
in Alabama. The subject was ore
sented by Carl B. James, horticuku
rist of the L. & N. Railway, who call
cd attention to the steadily advanc¬
ing price of the product for the last
four years. According to Mr. lames,
■ the acreage planted in the states tra-
1 versed by the L. & N. Railway in
1014 was 98,825 acres, and for th«
j strawberries a price of from 4 to 1!
; cents per quart was secured. In
j 1917 with 96,000 acres planted, the
: price of berries per quart advanced
Lo from 6 to 16 cents. In 1918 the
acreage was reduced to * 2,000 acres,
and the price of berries var ; ed from
18 to 20 cents per quart. The 1915
plantings were 51,000 acres, with the
price from 18 to 85 cents, some lo¬
calities going even higher. The
plantings and shipments have at a!i
times been below the demand.
Among those attending the meet¬
ing of the Society was Mr. Frank
Holman, of York, Alabama, the
largest individual grower of stray/
berries-in the South. His shipments
in 1918 amounted to over 25,000
crates, which at J4.00 produced a
gross revenue of $102,000. Due to
dry weather, however, the past year
>ut 10,000 crates were grown, which
at an average of $6.00, produced a
gross revenue of $60,000. Mr. Hoi
man believes that could he nave 8e
cured the labor necessary to work out
■fis crop immediately after picking
last year, he would have been able to
have doubled the size of this year’s
crop, as it would then have been able
to withstand the dry weather.
o
W. O. Wade, Republic, Mo., sold
8916 dollars worth of strawberries
from one acre, season 1919.
About 4,000 acres of' spinach will
be grown in the Austin, Texas, 89C
tion this season.
