THE FIRST VIOLET
I’m here in the shade of th* first
leaves of Spring,
The fresh, dew-wet leaves in the
sweet air of morn.
Throw' wide your sad heart to the
glad news I bring
From the durk earth mould whence
I’ve lately been born.
The winter is gone with its dark
stormy days,
Spring cometh apace with its smile
and its song;
The wood deck themselves in their
garments of grace,
The brooks sing aloud as they hur¬
ry along.
Earth is born again n*w in Beauty
and Light;
New glory awakes over mountain and
stream;
As the God once more had said
‘‘Let there be light!
Earth revealeth again the marvel and
dream.
All sorrow can last but a short night
we know;
In the morning comes joy on grief¬
healing wings,
So I push up my head from the cold
earth below—
