ONLY PIGS DIED THIS TIME,
- BUT MIGHT BE BABIES NEXT
They were only pigs, but the man¬
ner in which they were handled il¬
lustrates the costliness of human
carelessness. The story of how they
lost their lives is worth the telling
because the United States Depart¬
ment of Agriculture believes that
similar carelessness constantly en¬
dangers human lives.
The tory begins with a Florida
farmer who recently sent a lead of
hogs to market. Upon post-mortem
examination by a Government in¬
spector at the slaughterhouse where
Federal meat Inspection is main¬
tained a large proportion of the swine
were found badly affected with tu¬
berculosis. To locate the source of
infection responsible for the condi¬
tion, the Federal Bureau of Animal
Industry—which among its other du¬
ties aids States in eradicating tuber¬
culosis—began an investigation.
Tests of the Florida farmer's live
stock showed no tuberculosis among
his cattle, but four of his brood
sows reacted when tested, showing
that probably they were diseased.
Determined to find* the source of
this disease, the history of hogs was
investigated. The trail led to New
Orleans, where it was learned that
two of the sows had come from Iowa,
one from Illinois, and one from
Maine. The Federal Inspector in
charge communicatet with the Towe
breeder from whom two of the sows
had been secured, and who was a
veterinarian. He was induced to
Apply the tuberculin teat to his drove
of hogs.. There were a large number

on post-mortem examination were
found to be tubercuioua. On the same
farm there was a herd of cattle that
had passed a tuberculin teat several
years before but had since been on
u show circuit where they were as¬
sociated with untested stock.
...Upon applying a reteat to find
the source of infection several of the
cattle reacted. When slaughtered
they too disclosed lesions of tuber¬
culosis. Here is how the malady had
spread to the diseased brood of sows
on the Florida farm: As pigs they
had been fed on raw milk from the
infected herd of cattle in Iowa.
Summing up the evidence, Dr. J.
G. Fish, the Federal inspector, states.
“The point I wish to make is: Thai
the milk or by-products that product
the same disease in babies using tht
same milk. H
The trail of infection Is now be¬
ing followed 'to Illinois and Maim
to locate and, if possible, stamp oui
the disease at the other sources. In
the case mentioned the tuberculous
stock menaced Florida. There is nc
way of telling what State might bt
endangered tl)e next time, Th.
United States Department of Agr!
culture advises the greatest care ii.
purchasing breeding stock and it
states that even then, before am
animals are brought Into direct con
toct with a healthy herd, they should
be kept in quarantine until known
to be free from infectious disease.
