AS TO COMPETITION
The business man who can’t stand
the gaff of competition without “hoi-1
lering” “foul play!” is a bum sport. |
We have labored against cut-price, i
competition in various quarters for
three years, and we have occasionally
romped on people in our editorial col
umns when we felt that we were not
treated right. But we have fought
fairly, squarely, openly and above¬
board for living prices and for the
business we have felt entitled to. No
man can accuse us of being an unfair
or an unsportsman-like competitor.
When we quote a price, we have care¬
fully figured that price upon known
costs and checked it against the ac¬
cumulated experience of other print
ers, and we know it is right. And we
don’t cut that price in the face of
cut-price competition. We have al
ready figured it as low as we can af¬
ford to do it. If another printer
wants to take it at a lower price, he
can have it. If he is contented to con¬
tinue doing business in Poverty Ally,
that’s his funeral. For our part, we
want to move off that street without
the assistance of the undertaker.
We have striven to improve out
organization and service so that tlu-,
latter is worth what we have to
charge for it. Quality workmanship
and service are at a premium, The
efficient, successful business man
is willing to pay the right price to get
what he wants “on time—and right. »)
And the broad minded business man
realizes that his home newspaper
renders him valuable service indi¬
rectly that it makes no charge for.

chances of the job not being just as
he wanted it, arid the value of the

If you are a business man frothing
under the spur of competition, buck
up! Come back! If you can’t meet
competitive prices, give more atten¬
tion to the quality of your goods, the
efficiency of your service, the at¬
tractive display of your merchandise
—and advertiae.
Don’t lie down in the face of com¬
petition and snarl at it. That gdts
you nothing. Competition—real com
petition, not lying down before it—
is the life of trade. It makes more
trade and is a spur to efficiency. Use
all the means at your command to
meet it. And don’t forget advertising,
That’s the medicine we use.
If you have no better excuse for
doing business than low prices, the
quicker you get out of business the
better. If you have a better excuse,
advertise it.. People aren’t going to
buy your goods at any price unless
they are what they want and are
pleasingly served. They will pay
more for your goods if you make
them prefer your goods and service.

APOLOGIES TO CITY
SANITARY DEPARTMENT
In an editorial in our issue of Jan¬
uary 27 under the heading, “Let’s
Get Ready For Company,” we made
reference to the unsightly dumpings
rubbish flanking both sides of the
Mat-on road at the city’s gates, and
that our own city sanitary
was responsible for this.
Mr. W. G. Brisendine, chairman of
council committee on streets and
has quite justly jumped
in us for this reflection on his depart
which he says is not the guilty

refuse is the city’s official
dumping ground, and that any
ignorant of the location of the
1 said dumping ground and who has
1 more refuse to dispose of than the
city’s truck can handle on its
rounds, will be directed thereto on
inquiring of him.
We are glad to correct this hasty
reflection upon the city sanitary de
partrnent, and hope that all citizens
will co-operate with the department
in keeping the approaches to our city
free of unsightly rubbish.
We have quite recently heard the
sanitary department highly compli¬
mented on the efficient work being
done by the city truck in removing j

Of all the bushels of rot that is be

noticing and is only a vehicle that

THE COUNTRY PRESS
From The Monroe Advertiser,
Forsyth,Ga.
Anyone who attends a meeting of
the editors of weekly newspapers
soon realizes that he is in the pres
ence of earnest and able men. This is
truer today than ever before. The
country editor is one of the business
men of his community in a much
greater degree than heretofore. He
ruri.s an establishment which minis
ters to a wider range of needs both
literary and commercial than in form¬
er days. His plant, if it is up-to-date,
represents some of the most expen
.sive machinery and some of the
greatest achievements of the inven¬
tor. It carries a payroll which runsin
to the thousands. The modern coun¬
try printshop brings to the doors of
the peiple of its territory those vari
ous classes of work which in quality
and quantity could formerly be se¬
cured only from distant firms at
higher prices.
The outlook of the country press
i s not as narrow as it once was. Every
important movement in state or na
tion now seeks to secure the co-oper
ation of the country papers and these
papers do what they can to advance
the interests of these wider fields as
V vell as those of the particular county,
Neither are these'papers as rural in
their appearance and contents as
their names would indicate.
It is true, in a general way, that
country press is manned by men
to the traditional printer of
fame. The printer's trade has
a new dignity along with its
responsibilities and accom

new day has dawned for the coun¬
press and it is measuring up to

BOIL IT DOWN
(Nebraska State Journal)
If you’re writing for the press
Boil it down.
Better say a little less,
Bill it down.
Periphrastic methods wear
the readers everywhere;
Don’t be long in getting there—
Boil it down.
a message for mankind?
Boil it down.
not be to mercy blind,
Boil it down.
you think you have a great
important truth to state,
not circumambulate,
Boil it down.
Do not loiter on the way,
Boil it down.
Say the thing you want to say,
Boil it down.
Wasting language is a sin,
Screeds too long and weak won’t win.
So before you send stuff in,
Boil it down.
Be it praise or cold retort,
Boil it down.
Earnest thought or said in sport,
Boil it down.
Crack the nut you’d have us eat,
Keep the shell, product the meat,
This our motto: “Short and sweet”—
Boil it down.
