His Own Crandfather.
George II. M , of Titus¬
ville, Pa., committed guieitle the
other day on discovering that he
was his own grandfather, lie left
the following letter: “I married a
widow who had a grown-up daugh¬
ter. My father visited our house
very often, fell in love with my
step-daughter and married her. So
my father became my son-in-law and
my step-daughter my mother, be¬
cause she was my father’s wife.
Borne time afterward my wife had a
son. He was my father’s brother
in-law and my uncle, for he was the
brother of my step-mother. My
father’s wife, who is my step¬
daughter, had a son. He was, of
course, my brother and at the same
time my grandchild, for he was the
son of my daughter. My wife was
my grandmother, because she was
my mother’s mother. I was my
wife’s husband and grandchild at
the same time, and, as the husband
of a man’s step-mother is his grand¬
father, I am my own grandfather.”
Simple Remedy for the Crip.
Here is another remedy' for the
grip: A level teaspoonful of com¬
mon cooking soda dissolved in two
thirds of a glass of water; repeat
every two hours until soreness and
headache are gone; then one extra
dose for good measure.
It is not best to take a dose just
before or just after eating.
It is seldom necessary to take
, more than three or four doses.
The above is the dose for grown
patients. Lessen the dose for chil¬
dren according to age.
The greatest blizzard perhaps of
the century swept over the south
Sunday night. The oldest inhabi¬
tant does not remember its equal.
Some of Uncle Sam’s new half
breed subjects have been killing
some of ouv soldiers at Manila. An
observance of the Monroe doctrine
would have prevented this loss of
life.
Mr. II. D. Royal, of Irwin coun¬
ty, passed through the city Monday,
accompanied by Dr. W. L. Story,
of Sycamore, enroute to Atlanta to
have a cancer cut out of his ear.
Mr. Royal’s many friends wish him
a successful operation and a com¬
plete recovery.—Cordele Sentinel.
An exchange says that every pa¬
per in the state should publish the
fact that burnt corn is a sure cure
for cholera. It was first discovered
by burning a pile of corn belonging
to a distillery. It was thrown to
the hogs and eaten by them. Before
that a number of them had been dy¬
ing each day, but the disease imme¬
diately disappeared. It is so simple
a remedy that it can be easily tried,
and if found efficacious, should be
generally used as a preventive.

If the editor of this paper had
been in the newspaper business one
hundred yeats, instead of forty, as
erroneously stated by the Tifton
Gazette, and said editor had never
received aline of advertising in any
way from the railroads, that fact
would not be a factor in shaping his
preference for cash contracts with
the nearby railways. Now let the
tireless editor of the Gazette stand
up and answer this question: Has
a railroad the right to decline to re¬
new a contract? Unless this ques¬
tion can be answered with an em¬
phatic no, there does not. seem to
be room for further discussion of j
_
the subject. J
The Chameleon.
In SaV.mlay's Atlanta Journal
Smith Clayton has an interesting
article on Atlanta’s clock winder
and complains that the official is
very poorly paid for his services,
lie says that if the man who at¬
tends to the clock had to support
himself from what the county com¬
missioners allow' him for his ser¬
vices, he would, ‘‘like the cha¬
meleon, he compelled to live on air.”
Now, do chameleons live on air?
There is art old fable that accounts
for their varied colors on the
ground that they survive on wind,
and some of the poets have accused
them of the same mode of living.
But is it true? There are a great
many chameleons in this section of
the country and those who have
watched them know that they are
not even given to fasting. About
the quickest thing in the world is
the movement of a chameleon when
it darts toward a fly. The fly is
caught and gobbled up quicker than
the eye can wink.
The only chameleon that lives on
wind is the political sort. The
many-htied, harmless and pretty lit¬
tle fellows that run along the fences
of South Georgia and Florida have
strong appetites and get their meals
as regularly as any other kind of
animal.—Valdosta Times.
The chameleon catches its food
with, its tongue, which is covered
with a coating of mucilagious stuff
that adheres to whatever it strikes
with the tenacity of a bulldog. The
darting out of the tongue is almost
too rapid for the eye to detect and
its reach is wonderful. No up-to
snuff fly will sit in three inches of
one of these pretty little “fas¬
cinators.”
A Good Grown Gourd.
Yesterday Mr. W, B. Corey
brought us a gourd that has certain¬
ly attained its allotted growth. It
was raised on Mr. Ben Cravey’s
place in Worth county and Mr.
Corey says Ben’s earn grows to
match his gourds.
It is of the kind called water
gourd, which some time, ago were
used a good deal for carrying water
to the field or for keeping lard in.
This one measures 3 feet 10 inches
long, 2 feet 11 inches around the
short way and 1 feet 2 inches around
the long way.
The editor of the Ocilla Dispatch
can bring in another horse.—Tiftoil
Gazette.
Well, that is a starter, indeed.
But if we set out to down a man
we’d do it in fine style, and not
come at him with a nubbin of a’
gourd like that.
Mr. John I>. Paulk, one of our
best farmers, has a gourd that Ben’s
gourd would rattle in. It measures
0 feet 2 inches one way, 5 feet 2
inches the other and holds exactly
17 gallons and one quart.
Roll in another gourd!
Calhoun county, 111., which has
the distinction of never having had
a negro, a bank, a railroad or a tel¬
egraph or telephone line within its
borders, on Tuesday started out' to
lynch a negro who came to work on
the building for a bank. He was the
first negro who had been in the
county for fifty years, and only es¬
caped death by swimming the Illi¬
nois river and walking all night in
his frozen clothes to his home in
Alton.—Ex. And that in the north,
