ELDER MATTHEW SIKES.
Woman.
Editor Dispatch: I am thinking
what a wonderful piece of creation
a woman is, and yet how hard her
lot in this sublunary world. Al¬
most the first we hear of her that
old serpent, the devil, was picking
at her and playing his tricks upon
her and ho succeeded bo well that
he has continued it until now. lie
seems to know exactly where the
trigger is that throws his deadfalls.
If he wishes to raise confusion in a
neighborhood ho knows exactly
how to do it. If he would raise a
muss between husband and wife he
knows just what to tell her and how
to make her believe it. I wonder
who made him so wise? And when
he has used poor, unfortunate wo¬
man to accomplish his meanness he
hides his deformed face behind her
and says, “The woman done it,’ r
and she wears the blame. And if
the old serpent would kick up a
dust in the church he gets in the
preachers—but I am not after
church troubles now.
But, after all, woman is the
crowning piece of creation. Every
thing great, grand or noble points
back to her as its author. To her
society looks for its finer mould and
without her influence society would
take a back seat and civilization
would become as the wilds of a
frontier. Her very presence awes
the most vicious into becoming mod¬
esty. The man that would indulge
in vulgar or profane language in the
presence of a woman is regarded as
beneath the notice of respectable
people. In the very order of things
the “masculine” turns his eye with
fond admiration to the “feminine.”
Even the little school boy, true to
nature’s impulse, indulges fond an¬
ticipations of “when she and I
shall get a little older.” And when
he enters well into his ’teens she
takes almost entire control of his
meditations, lightening his toil by
day and sweetening his dreams by
night. And as he Views her in her
purity (as he thinks) he strives to
elevate himself that he may be
worthy of such a prize and thus
reaches a point in moral bearing far
above ■where he would have ever
reached hut for the influence of
woman.
A home without a woman is a
contradiction of terms. It may be
a place to stop and stay, but not a
home. It is like victuals without
seasoning, like day without sun¬
shine. Just let home he left for one
week without a woman and every
thing on the place feels her absence.
Chickens, cats, dogs, pigs—every¬
thing is half starved and ready to
leave home. But on her return her
work begins, gathering up and ad¬
justing what has been neglected for
a week—shoes, socks, hats, coats
scattered over the floor that has not
been dusted in a week—ashes all
over the hearth. You may say
what you please about the everlast¬
ing rattle of a woman’s tongue, but
it is very poor music in this -world
without it. Even if it does throw
in a few discords occasionally it
only serves to make the chords
sweeter. The voice and presence
around the sick man is like sun¬
shine on a winter day; and the soft
pressure of her hand upon his fe¬
vered brow is felt to the end of his
fingers and toes.
But notwithstanding the central
position her sphere occupies in life,
there is no other creature so abused
and mistreated. The laws of our
country, while claiming to protect
her, restrict her to a mere servant.
She cannot make a valid contract
except by permission and even in
wedlock she is required to obey her
inferiors and if she essays to pit her
judgment against his she is prompt¬
ly reminded that she is “the weaker
vessel.” But when it conies to toil
and hardship her weakness is not
considered—cold or hot, wet or dry,
late and early she must be about her
business.
Meu folks liave some time for fun,
But woman's work is never done.
The man that mistreats a woman
should be dragged off in the woods
and have his head chopped off with
a dull axe in sand. M. Sikes.
