THE OCILLA DISPATCH. OCILLA, IRWIN COUNTY, GA., FRIDAY, APRIL 14, 1899. Mr. S. J. Hancock, of Abbeville, visited his sister, Miss Libbie, in’ Ocilla, Saturday and Sunday last. The old reliable ‘‘Good Luck Store” has some interesting news for our readers in this issue. Peruse it. Hon, Bill Henderson lias had his corn plowed twice. Guess he will pull fodder some time next month. Watermelons that were unpro¬ tected were nipped by Jack Frost during his recent visit to this sec¬ tion. “Leo,” up at Whitley, has our thanks for a communication from that burg. Hope to hear from there often. Prof. Little’s address before the rhetoric class of the Ocilla High School Saturday night was a very able one. Mr. Bob Henderson has been eat¬ ing ripe strawberries at bis house, lie did not get them out of a tin can, either. It is strange what queer noises some people will make when the fortunes of the ballot box gives them the unexpected. Mr. J. L. Paulk is making some improvements on his residence which will add much to its id ready hand¬ some appearance. Mr. Harper, former agent of the W & A. at this place, has accepted » position as bookkeeper with Row¬ ell, Bullard & Co. Eastei' bats will be in evidence biuiidny. The beauty of an Easter hat, no matter how great it may be, is v only secondary. At its meeting Tuesday night the town council discussed the subject of an artesian well at some length, j No conclusion was arrived at, the well may yet materialize. AUNT SOFRONY SAYS That she thinks people worship [the Master better when the warmth of a good stove adds to the warmth of their religious ardor. That some young men, as soon as thcy spy a little fuss/.y-looking down on their upper lip, feel as proud as a peafowl with his first full-grown tail. That she has noticed that the modest, demure girl almost invari- ably reaches the altar before her forward sister, and she’s trying t. be that way. That some married men turn gray before their time on account of lying awake nights trying to formulate a plausible excuse for refusing to buy their wives ixn Easter hat. That she lias heard both boys and in their lives, and this is a kind of bragging she royally hates. That almost anybody can get married, but staying married is something else. There is so much divorcing these days that she has j almost decided to remain superin-' tendent of herself. Hut there’s no telling. — mm u mm — Henderson, Paulk & Co. are ex- tending their trade over a wide ter- | and they have the goods _ ritory, supply almost a ny demand. j Ml'. J. b 7Jones has been trying to part with the grippe for several weeks, and at last has about suc¬ ceeded, we are glad to state. The carnival at Fitzgerald today and tomprrow promises to be a grand affair, and quite a number will attend froin this section. In the ejectment case of W. R. and R. P. Flits vs. Smith & Bussey, in last week’s superior court, a ver¬ dict was given for the defendants. The “Fourth Street Drug Store” is the most popular business place in town. People go there to “laugh and grow fat” as well as to secure bargains. Harper & Tucker are deservedly popular with the trading public. Their patrons get full value for their money as well as courteous treatment. Since a certain young man in Ocilla came to the conclusion that he has two best girls instead of one, he has near about smiled his mouth out of plumb. Our handsome young friend, Mr. ! “Lite” Tucker, is out again, after a long seige of grippe, lie is not as hefty as he was, but his smile es¬ caped damage. Dr. Macon has a bird cage which he made with a pocket knife. It is a magnificent piece of work and a heavy man (like the Dr.) can stand on it without breaking it. The grand jury last week, in their general presentments, indorsed Com¬ missioner Henderson’s plan for working the public roads with the county convicts, as an experiment, Mrs. W. M. Light frost here Monday morning, and some said there was ice. i don’t think any damage was done, Some watermelons near by are () K, judging from the quantity of news- papers I saw in the patch. (X ot the Dispatch?) 1 heard a girl say she believed she had rather attend the picnic on the 20th than the carnaval. Of course she is the daughter of an old Confederate, and wants to see the Honor thy father and mother that! thy days may be prolonged. , There was a misunderstanding among the vocalists Sunday, some asserting that the sing would be ! Willacooche church, while others sa td it would be at Ocilla. After meeting in this burg and consulting and shivering for quite awhile, they decided to go to Ocilla, and go they did. For awhile it seemed like our huro was deserted, but later in the ° day Jimniie Whitley, Charlie Royal and _m; ss Minnie Koval came along, and finding they were left, stopped i here and we had some excellent 1 music at Hon. Wiley Whitley’s April I!. Leo. Gilt-Edge Notes from Berrien. Miss JaneWheeles was a welcome visitor at the home of Mr. I. G. Chambless last week. Miss Maude McMillan was the guest of her grandmother, Mrs. Sallie McMillan, last week. Mr. J. L. (J. Smith, who has been very sick, is much improved at this writing, to the delight of his many friends. Jack Frost was an unwelcome vis¬ itor in this community for the last few nights. He left the watermelon vines in a feeble county. Miss Mary McMillan, of whose illness mention was made some time ago, we are glad to state is slowly but steadily improving. Wonder who the young man was that loaned out his buggy last Sun¬ day and thereby missed taking his j girl home? Look out, L., and keep on the safe side next time. The sing at Mr. John McMillan’s last Sunday was well attended and some good music was furnished by the excellent musicians present.
