Lane will deliver his lecture, “Lessons Not Learned in Books,” at the academy May 0th. Mr. T. O. Campbell, of Oeilla, visited McRae and Jacksonville,Ga., Friday, Saturday and Sunday last. R. B. The blue and the gray will have a jolly time in Fitzgerald tomorrow, and a large crowd from tnis section will attend. There were fifteen additions to the church as a result of the recent protracted meeting in the Oeilla Methodist church. Judge Wiley Whitley was in town yesterday talking up the veterans’ picnic, which occurs at Fitzgerald Saturday (tomorrow). A citizen, on being saked the name of the latest secret order in Oeilla, replied: “It’s dam some¬ thing, hut I forget what.” In a week or so we will send out to each subscriber in arrears a state¬ ment of his account, and hope to re¬ ceive the earliest possible response. “Darby,” the handsome baby boy of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Paulk, has been ill for about a week, with some¬ thing-like lagrippe, but is not seri¬ ously so. Mr. Tom Elarbee was called to Stark, Fla., last Friday on account of the Serious illness of his mother. He returned Tuesday, leaving her much improved. We Tegret to learn of the serious illness of that good lady, Mrs. J. B. Paulk, who is suffering with head ami lung trouble, and hope for a speedy recovery. Sk Pioneer Gone. There are but few of the early settlers of the county left—the men who were here when Irwin was the of Indians and wild beasts, with a few white settlers scattered over it—and this week it is our sad duty to chronicle the death of one of that number. Ho was a consistent member of Old Union Primitive* Baptist church, and was a faithful Christian in deed as well as in name. llis remains were interred in the Harper burial ground near his home km Friday, April 21, 18t*U, in the [presence of a large concourse of sor¬ rowing t dative:; and friends. A Trip For Nothing. Mr. J. 11. DeLong, of a Chatta- • nooga bridge building- company called on Commissioner Henderson a lew days ago to give estimate on an iron bridge fourteen hundred feet long. Mr. Henderson informed him that he did not contemplate building siibli a bridge, there!ore had no use Tor an estimate. At this Mr. Do¬ Long seemed much surprised, and handed him the following, which was written in fairly good imita- lion of Mr. Henderson’s hand-writ- mg: “Give me particulars for an iron bridge 1,400 feet long—i. e., price of your bridges, etc. M. JIicxduksqv, Co. Comm. Irwinville, Ga., Apr. 15, 1899.” The party who wrote the above may get into trouble, as imperson¬ ating another is a punishable of¬ fense. Knights of Damon. A lodge of the above order was organized in Oeilla Tuesday night, at the office of Dr. J. E. Geothe, and the following officers were elected: K. B. Allen, Commander. 'E. W. Fisher, Vice-Commander. W. F. Harper, Prelate. C. L. Sibley, Jr., Senior Warden. J. R. Roberts, Junior Warden. 0. E. Bruce, Sentinel. Dr. J. E. Goethe, was appointed medical examiner. Mr. J. T. Neeson, the district or- ganizer, has been here for about two weeks and has succeeded admirably.
