riches. There is more comfort,
more enjoyment and more pleasure
in it than anything in life. A good
name will secure for you the esteem
and confidence of your fellow men.
It is a protection against all evil re¬

Let me urge yon, my, friends, to
have a purpose in life and lyt your
aim be high, and evisv s^fjy.e to reach
it. Pursue it with such firmness,
that nq temptation can, weaken it,,
and.yoyi will be almost sure tojpaeh,

glory and fame to live for and to be
proud of, and you will have friends
on every side; while, if you have no
purpose, no aim, in life, nothing to
strive for, you will not be content
anywhere nor never rise in this
typrld higher than you now are; and
there will be many doubts as to you
rising in another. You will never
have a friend that will amount to
anything more than yourself. It is
the first step that leads you on, and
while it is not impossible to retrace
that step, it is hardly ever done.
You might overcome all evil habits
if you tried hard enough; but it
would be much easier not to begin
to form such habits than to turn,
from them after tj^ey are begun.
Even if the first, step should be re¬
traced, the ccmsfeqnejiees can neiVpr ;

to bury, them, you caUilfit,.
If you, have a- good name, you

pvizo. worth laboring, for, and yon
have only to fix your eye on it and
press onward with firmness of mind
and it is yours. If yon have formed
any bad habits break them off now,
and f(never turn from them. It is
easier to do so now than to wait
longer, for in the race for a good
name you must start true and keep
on to the end. Farmer Girl.

A north Georgia editor builds up
tbe following and from behind it
winks at the girls; “A woman—
God bless her—if she really loves a
man, has no thought of any other;
one is all sufficient; but a man may
love a woman wit); - warmth of a
Simoon, and at the same time feel
like a good, healthy south wind to¬
wards a dozen others. That is the
difference between a man and a wo¬

good and the bad. One average

to supply an army of men.”

Maxims of Iffiarriage.
In I bill Caine’s new novel there
are a pair of delightful lovers who
married and who formulate the
following rules for their guidance:
1. Since you are married y on may
as well make the best of it.
2. So make some maxims and,try
to live up to them.
3. Don’t be discouraged if you
fail. You will, fail, but perhaps you
won’t always fail.
-1. Never both be cross at the
same time. Wait your turn,
5. Never cease to be lovers. If
you cease, some on,e else may begin.
6. You were gentleman and lady
before you were husband and wife.
(Don’t forget it.
7. Keep yourself at youy best..
It is a compliment to your partner.
8. Keep your ideal high. You
may, missdt, but it is better to miss
a high-one than hit a low one.
t). A blind love is a foolish love.
Encourage the best.
10. Permanent mutual’ respect is
necessary, for permanent mutual
love.
11. 1 he tight cord is the easiest
to snap,
12. If you take liberties, be pre¬
pared to give them.
13. There is only one thing worse
than quarrels in public. That is
caresses.
14. Money is not essential to hap¬
piness, but happy people usually
have enough.
15. To save some.
1(1. The easiest way of saving is
to do without things.
17. If you can’t then, you had
better do without a wife.
18. The man who respects his
wife docs not turn her into a mendi¬
cant. Give her a purse of her own.
ltd If you save, save at your own
expense.
20. In all matters of money, pre¬
pare always for the worst and hope
for the best.

Far Hyclrcphofsiu,
L. A. Alarm,, of Jeffersonville,
Ind., having seen, in the Hopkins¬
ville Kentuckian an account of a
case of hydrophobia in North Chris¬
tian, furnishes the following receipt
for the treatment of such cases:
“The time between the biting of
any animal by a dog showing .signs
of hydrophobia is not less than ten
days, but may be. nine months. Af¬
ter the animal, has been rabid, a bite
or,scratch with his tooth upon a per¬
son or slobber coining in contact
with a sore, or raw place, would pro¬
duce hydrophobia just as though he
had bean bitten.by a mad dog. Hy¬
drophobia oan be prevented and I
will.give what is known to he an in¬
fallible remedy, if properly admin¬
istered, for man or beast. A dose
for a horse or cow should be about
four times as great as for a person.
It is not too late to give the medi¬
cine any time before the spasm
eomes on.
“The first dose for a person is
one and a half ounces of Elecampane
root, bruised, put in a pint of new
milk, reduced to one-lialf by boiling,
then take all at one dose in the
morning, fasting until afternoon, or
at least a very light diet after several
hours have elapsed. The second
dose the same as the first, except
take two ounces of the root. Third
dose same as last, to be taken every
other day. Three doses are all that
is needed and there need be no fear.
This I know’ from my own expe¬
rience, and I know of a number of
other cases where it has been entire¬
ly successful. This is no guess work.
These persons I allude to were bit¬
ten by their own dogs, that had
been bitten by rabid dogs and were
penned up to see if they would go
mad. They did go mad and bit th.e
persons. This remedy has been used
in and about Philadelphia for about
forty years, with great success, and
is known as Goodman’s remedy. I
am acquainted with a physician who
told me he knew of its use for over
thirty years and never knew of a
case that failed where it was prompt¬
ly administered. Among other cases
he mentioned was one where a mutf-
ber of cows had been bitten by a
mad dog. To half the number they
administered the remedy, to the
other half none. The latter all
died of hydrophobia, while those
that took the Elecampane disease.” and milk,

We do not knpw, what relation

all accounts they are very much on
a parity with one another when it

IS IT RIGHT
For an Editor to Recommend Pat¬
ent Medicines ?
From Sylvan Valley News, Brevard, N. C.
It may be a question whether the
editor of a newspaper has the right
to publicly recommend any of the
various proprietary medicines which
flood the market, yet as a preventive
of suffering we feel it a duty to say
a good word for Chamberlain’s Colic,
Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy.
We have known and used this medi¬
cine in our family for hventy years
and have always found it reliable.
In.many cases a dose of this remedy
would save hours of suffering while
a physician is awaited. Wo do not
believe in depending implicitly on
any medicine for a cure, but we do
believe that if a bottle of Chamber¬
lain’s Diarrhoea Remedy ware kept
on hand and administered at the
inception of an attack much suffer¬
ing might be avoided and in very
maDy cases the presence of a physi¬
cian would not be required. At
least this has been onr experience
during the past twenty years. For
sale by Dr. G. M. Macon <& Co.,
