THE SAFFOLD HORHOR.
A White Wan Robted and His Wife
Outraged in. Hi la Presence by
Two Negroes.
At Saffold, a railroad station in
Early county, on Thursday night of
last week, the agent, Mr. Ogletree,
was robbed by two negroos, and hi a
wife outraged in his presence by
each of them. The approach of a
freight train frightened the fiends
and they departed, else doubtless
ihnrder and arson would have been
added to their crimes.
Bainbridge, Ga., July 24.—“Kid
Jim,” one of the Saffold negroes,
was located this afternoon in a cabin
near Pinckard, Ala. He is guarded
by about one hundred of his race,
who say they will defend him against
any attack, A posse of one hun¬
dred men heavily armed left Bain-
bridge this evening for the cabin,
aud say they will take “Kid Jim,”
dead o.i alive, guard or uo guard.
There will be a double lynching
in West Baiabridge early tomorrow
morning, unless something unfore¬
seen occurs. Two more members
of the band of robbers, murderers
and rapists are in the hands cf a
determined posse of whites.
One of the captives is Charles
Mack, the companion in crime of
Louis Sammin, who was lynched
yesterday. It was Sammin and
Mack who outraged Mrs. Ogletree
in the presence of her husband at
Saffold, one holding a pistol at the
head of tjie husband to prevent his
interference.
Mack was captured at Iron City
by a" i white man named Cordell.
Cordell tried to get his prisoner
through to jail, hence secreted him.
A mob of several hundred country
people met Cordell and asked the
whereabouts of his prisoner. He
declined to say. A rope was quick¬
ly put about his neck and he was
given ten minutes in which to give
up the rapist or Ins life. He then
told where the negro was. In a
short while the crowd had Mack.
While arrangements for tho lynch¬
ing were in progress a telegram
came from Iron City that another
member of the gang had been cap¬
tured.
It would require several hours to
get the new prisoner to the scene,
so it was determined to postpone the
execution of Mack until tomorrow,
at which time it is proposed to have
a double hanging for the purpose of
impressing other possible members
of the gang who are not yet known.
Before Sammin was lynched he
confessed and said that he and Mack
had robbed the Ogletrees, and that
both had outraged tbe woman.
While they were committing their
crimes, he said, six others, whose
names ha gave, were on watch out¬
side. Mack is said to have con¬
fessed. corroborating Sammin’s
statement. The men, he said, were
banded together for murder, rob¬
bery and rape. Five of the negroes
named, including Sammin, are now
dead, and every indication favors
the death of two more tomorrow.
The information is that, the pris¬
oner from Iron City will arrive at
about 2:50 a. in. and the lynching
will probably occur shortly there*
.after.
Blakely, Ga., July .‘if.-**-Sheriff
Slack informs the correspondent
that the negro Sammin, the acknowl¬
edged rapist, of Mrs. Ogletree at
Saffold, was lynched early Sunday
morning before he reached there.
Three wore lynched there on Satur¬
day night in the forks of the river,
and two more ot the same gang were
lynched near Bainbridge Sunday
evening. A telephone message from
Jakin received here to-day stated
that a guard with Charlie Mack, the
leader of the gang of robbers, had
been caught and was on the way to
Blakely. As he had not reached
here at 7:30, it is supposed that he
met the same fate of his confeder¬
ates in crime.
Leesburg, Ga., July 2 1.—An un¬
known negro, slim, under height,
gingercake color, who was supposed
to be one of the Ogletree ravishers,
was spotted five miles from town
this evening. The posse attempted
to arrest him, when he drew a pistol
and attempted resistance. He was
instantly shot. The covoeer s jury
returned a verdict of justifiable
homicide.
Saffold, Ga., July ‘it.-—After
Thursday night’s crime all men with¬
in twenty-five miles of Saffold joined
in bands and with Sheriff Patterson
and jiosso took up a hot chase, but
not until late Saturday afternoon
had tlioy gotten on t ho right track,
At r, o’clock Tom Unsay, a
mulatto of Brinson, was stopped
three miles in the 1 country and asked
assistance by Louis Sammin, w ho
claimed to be fleeing from justice on
account of having killed a man at
Jakin
Unsay thought Sammin to be one
of the perpetrators on Thursday’s
crime, and directed him into a va¬
cant house near by, w here he assured
him lie-could rest with safety. Lin-
say then hurried to Brinson, notified
those in pursuit, who wont at once
to tbe place directed, and finding
Sammin asleep, arrested him with-
out trouble and carried Kim to Brin-
-on. Mr. Ogletree positively indenti-
fled him as one of tho two who com-
inittod the crime, but ’he requested
that they take him to Suii'old for his
wife to confirm the identification,
Consequently, the negro, in the
hands of the mob, left Brinson on
the 5 o’clock morning train, and up-
on arrival at Satfold, the negro was
taken before Mrs. Ogletree, who
