Why Leave The Farm? Why arc so many old farmers Jbaving the farm and going to town? \Vhnt inducement is there in the towns for them? What encourage¬ ment -is it to a young man to see no many old men leaving their farms and going to town who were horn .and.veaied on the farm, who wore taught to farm for a living—.that it I -was the best, place oa eaith to live — that it was the most honest and honorable way «f making a living —that the most happiivess was found there—that the most pleasant days were spent there and everything more pleasant there than anywhere Use? ,.T cannot see any inducement in •town for a man who has spent the ■most of his life on the farm. What does he want to go to town for .in ,his old age? It seems t > me if lie •wanted jiea.ee and hrtppinoae, -ho would stay on the farm. After he, has almost broken himself down with work, why don’t he enjoy the .rest of his life on the farm and not goto town, as a. great many aro ■doing? They arc, not euco nr aging the young men to stay on the farm, but rather discouraging them, it’s enough to discourage them, or any one that wished to go to the farm. Ask a man who has lived twenty .five or thirty years on the farm -what he fame to town for. Sortie -will answer you one thing, some another. Probably it is to educate his children. Well, he didn't gPe his oldest children such an educa¬ tion. Why didn’t lio? Because he wasn’t able. And is he able now to leave his farm and go to town to educate the younger ones? It seems to me it would be cheaper to board them, if ho intends to educate them in town, and him stay on the farm and take care of it. I cannot see any reason why a man should leave the farm after he has raised his children al¬ most to men and women. lie had best stay there and teach them that it is the noblest occupation they lean find. Teach the young men to farm, if tl»oy wish to make an honest living. Teach the girls to respect the farm¬ er boys above all Others. If mors of this was done, I don’t think there would be quite so many boyn raised 'OR the farm that leave it. The older men leaving the farm discour¬ ages them. They think if they have lived so long on the farm and ■can do better in town what’s the use foe them to begin. They think they might as well go to town first as last, and when they got that into thoir heads, all the talk you can do will not convince them that they ,ara wrong and that they should stay OT 1 the farm, where they can go to sleep at eight o’clock, get up at four, and do an honest day’s labor with¬ out so much worry and trouble— where, they could go where they pleased and have as big a time as any town boy and enjoy it more. The old men should think of all this and stay on their farms and use their influence to keep the boys there, for you will not meet many- old men who have left the farm and gone to town but would go back if they could, and almost all do that can; and, besides, they wish they had never left it. If the young men would only listen to them they would get some good advice that they would never regret as long as they live. I wish that every young man would become a farmer for two or three years at least, and see what they could do. I think the greatest number would stay there. With best wishes, 1 Fajim-EB Gih a. During the civil war, as well aa in our late war with Spain, diarrhoea WBB one of the most troublesome diseases the army had to contend with. In many instances it became chronic and tho old soldiers still suffer from it. Mr. David Taylor, of Wind Kid go, Qreono Co., Fa., is one of these. Ho uses Chamber¬ lain’s Colio, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy and soys he never found anything that would give him such quick relief. It- is for sale by Dr. G. M. Mrtcon & Co., Druggist. Friday afternoon of last week the long-talked-of spelling boo came off at the Brushy Creek school The pupils of this school have been un¬ der the competent tutorage of Prof. 11. .]>. Sutton for several months and show careful training. The re- suit of the spelling bee is evidence of thnir, proficiency in spelling, and, it follows that they are also well up I in their other studies. After the Hohool exercises wore over, the classo.t for the spelling bee wore organized as follows:- SCHOOL CLASS. John Ilarjier, Reason Harper, Roxy Harper, James Harper, Pearly Harper, Needham Harper, Annie Harper, Hard. Paulk, Jacob Paulk, Albert Paulk, Fannie Paulk, Ed¬ win Paulk, George Grantham, Mad- isori McNeesu, John Willie Tucker, Thomas Tucker, Edgar Tucker ar.d Iuzzio Sutton. cs L. R. Tucker, L. J. Tucker, J. O. Sutton, j. W. Hatiion, Mins Lim Tucker, Miws Li.-..: - Tuixcr, duas Mollis I. raitthara, M : claggie Grantham and .'J.. . Susie, - 'ookroll. PM. Sutton gave out the words and the contest Was a lively and in¬ teresting one. The visitors went there to spell down the school and met defeat, the Dispatch representa¬ tive being among the easiest turned down. We may as well Rtate that the yisitora were defeated twice, arid then decided to wait awhile before tackling the school again. After the spoiling l/ee, Mr. L. R. Tucker made an interesting talk to the children. Three cheers for the bright pupils of the Brushy Greek school. Yes, Claude, that’s the way to do, and the little piece .of land will remain yours, You can buy land in Way cross or Brunswick, on the suburbs, in almost any size 1 lots, for $200 per acre, so you hold yours at double that figure, and homehunt- era won’t worry, ytmr town will not be crowded, you’ll know every body in tdwn, the merchants will sell two lead pencils apiece each day and you will still own the land. Yes, that’ll build the town to he a little bit o’tuiiig about vonr size.— Douglas Breeze. That hits other places as well as Douglas, arid it is the deadest blow a town can receive. Tho towns in Georgia that have died by this same blow can be numbered by the tons, and more will follow ho long as the policy of asking throe or four prices for real estate is continued, There is too much selfishness in this world, any way. An editor who died of starvation was being escorted to heaven by an angel who had been sent out for that purpose, says the Findlay (O.) Courier. “May I look at the other place before we ascend to eternal happiness?” “Easily,” said the an¬ gel. So they went below and skirm¬ ished around, taking in the sights. Tho angel lost sight of the editor and went around hades "to hunt him up. He was found sitting by & furnace fanning himself and gazing with rapture on a lot of people in the fire. There was a sign oil the furnace which said: “Delinquent Subscribers.” ii Come,” said the axigel' “we nmat be going.” i i You go on,” laid the editor, ‘’Pin not. going. This is heaven enough for me.” The other morning a cousin of President McKinley who is a resi¬ dent of this city, (and by the way, a “government pauper”) came slow¬ ly down the street wheeling a wheel¬ barrow of vegetables. lie was ask¬ ed why he did not get his cousin to give him a position. lie answered with true American spirit “I am too independent.” Everyone who knows the old gentleman is convinced that he is worfhy-of an easier time for he is ovor 70 years of age, but we do admire his grit.—Fitzgerald Enterprise. ^ Several loads of peaches have been offered for sale ou our streets this week at one dollar per bushel. I am the mother of eight children and have had a groat deal of ex¬ perience with medicines. Last Sum¬ mer my little daughter had the dysentery in its worst form. We thought she would die. I tried everything I could think of, good. but nothing seemed to do her any I saw by an advertisement in our paper that Chamberlain's Golio, Choiora and Diarrhea, Remedy was highly roeoinmended and sent and got a bottle at once. It proved to be one of the very best medicines we ever had in the house. It saved my little daughter’s life. 1 am anx¬ ious for every mother to know what an excellent medicine it is.
