We can't name each well-prepared dish oil the table, or describe fully the happy half hour spent there, but you may take it for granted that the chicken- pie was first-class, the baked pork just right, and the pies and custards and all the rest fully up to the standard of good cooking. It was one of those satisfying dinners— Hie kind that is calculated to make a man wish he was proprietor of two full-sized appetites. Mr. Paulk has a pretty home and farm, and knows how to make the former pleasant and the latter profit¬ able. The drouth hurt bis crops, but he made plenty to do him, and his cot- ton crop was nearly au average one; and as he did not pay out a cent for extra labor this year, it is safe to assume his ledger shows up well. A drive of about a mile brought us to.the old homestead of tins branch of the Paulk family Here resides Mr. Nas Paulk and his inter- estmg family, „ which includes his . good mother, widow of the late Loldy Paulk, than whom there never liver in Irwin a hotter citizen or neighbor. This old homestead can boast of one of the largest red-oaks perhaps,,, the county. Its spread of limb is about sixty-five feet. Mr. Frank Mercer, of Mercer’s Mill, in the western part of the county, was in Isabella last Wednes¬ day and informed us that he now has his flouring mill in perfect order, fitted out with first-class rocks, bolt¬ er and smutting machine, and is prepared to grind all the corn and wheat brought to his mill, guaran¬ teeing to make as fine flour as can be bad from the best merchant mills in the country.
