I Editor Dispatch: Ton recollect 1 that just two weeks ago Aunt So-j Irony iinjiiesteil m>» to di al on; a few lines to the old maids. And, 1 , while Aun!_Sofy occupies a ne«d !>laee in my esteem, and while it is contrary to my religion to Disc a request from a Indy, yet. I | confess to some degree of jealousy as to the motive prompting Aunt From*. I am afraid there is “cat in j lhe meal tub”.....a trap for my feet and * have lived long enough to Do j a bit cautious. Hee here. ! mist retain standing |„,. ()Um j SOMKV , iieum, and I have lost - gtanding with the widowers and bachelors, and I cannot afford to ^ old maids to the list. In | Aunt Frone knows that the whole , ine of my rcasou i ng h, ls been to I sustain the position of old maids— j that is, I have reasoned against wo- men marrying at all unless could get uoou men, and they are ! so awful scarce that while they j the turn of luck they cross the line ; into old-maidhood. This is partly ‘ 1he result of good sense in not grab-' I Ding at everything that wears breeches, merely for the sake of get-j ting married, and partly owing to u turn of luck. I»ut I don’t believe j much in luck. The rigid man failed ! to come along at the right time, j But she is none the worse for being | and old maid. She is the same wo -1 man she was before—just ;i little older—and many who marry young, j i hacl better waited longer. Ah, jf women could see as well beforehand as they can afterwards, there would be thousands more of old maids. And the fact is, I have heard more demand for old maids recently by ‘ wife hunters than for young girls. • ! Yes, it is no killing matter to be an i old maid. She has simply trod the j pathway of safety—refused matrimony-—which to risk ’ the dangers of I forethought and j all evidences due a j balanced mind. And, by the way, Air. Editor, ! there is another standpoint from | which 1 view this old maid question, and I confess that this has played some part iri causing me Ho decline Aunt lYony's request. Suppose I were to turn loose a shower of hot shot on all the old maids, what do you think would become of me? There is not much of me at best. Would there be even a grease spot left to mark the place of my demise? Good gracious! 1 may as well fall into the hands of a gang of prairie wolves as a gang of infuriated (don’t make the print read “infernal”) old maids. Yes, they would devour me body and breeches through this very paper! And while they gewhalloped the spizerinktums out of me the laugh would go off at my expense! No, Aunt Sopbiah, let me fool with forked lightning, but not with a gang of old maids. They don’t like menfolkfl much, nohow, and you know they are always half mad, or seem to be, and they “strike at a noise,” like a rattlesnake in the blind season! Another thing about them is, they have a good supply of ammunition and “keep their powdei diy. Tlicii S ,in never “snaps, but files evciy t time and hits where they look. And if I should say anything re j fleeting on old maids, some of i old widowers would raise a equal to Gabriel’s trumpet!
