War on the Mosquito. •
•Washington, I >oe. 20.-—The
United Slates government has for¬
mally recognized the responsibility
of the m< e.qiiito for the transmi.'
sion of yellow lever and malarial
diseases. This fact is indicated by
the issuance of a general order by
Maj.-Gon. Wood at Havana, di¬
rected to h’s post commanders, re¬
citing that the chief surgeon of the
department of Cuba has reported
that it is now well established that
malarial and yellow fever infection
are transmitted by the bites of
mosquitos, Therefore the troops
are enjoiDetl to observe carefully
two precautions; first, they are to
use mosquito bars in the barracks,
hospital and field service whenever
practicable. Kocortd, they are to
destroy the “wigglers,” or young
mosquitoes, by the use of pet re¬
loum on the waters where they
breed. Permanent pools or pud¬
dles are to be filled up.
To the. others are to be applied
ene outu*g of kerosene to each tif
teen square 1 feet of water twice a
month, which will # destroy not onl\
the young but the old mosquitos.
This does not injure drinking wa¬
ter, if drawn from below anil not
dipped out. Protection is thus se¬
cured according to the order, be¬
cause the mosqnito docs not fly far,
seeks shelter when the wind blows,
and - thus each community breeds
its^ownpnosquitos.
Persons who suffer from indiges
cause they cannot eat to;>'» the food re
quired to nourish the body and the
products of the undigested food they
do-eat poisons the blood. It is im
portant to cure indigestion as soon
as possible, aud the best method of
doing this is to use the preparation
known as Kodol Dyspepsia Cure.
It digests what you eat and res¬
tores all the digestive organs to per¬
fect health. Ocilla Drug Co.
Salt Revives Drownded Flies.
Maiden, Maos., Dec. 30.—Either
E. Bailey, of this city, tells of an
interesting experiment he has often
tried with entire success, apropos
the recent discussion of the action
of common salt upon the heart,
and the possibility of restoring
heart action after it has been sus
pended some time. lie says:
“I have submerged a large horee
fly in water and left it for forty
two hours. Upon removing it and
covering it with common table salt
it gradually revived, and with some
slight assistance in removing the
salt, which had become caked on
its body, was able to fly about as
well as ever, and apparently had
suffered no ill effects.
“I have submerged two flies the
■same length of time, and alter re¬
moving them from the water put
salt on one of them and none on
the other. Thc one salted would
revive and the other remain dead.
4 4 If the same principle carried
out would affect the human heart,
why could it not be applied to per¬
sons when apparently dead from
drowning?”

Small Pox.
In the western part of the county,
at Chula, there ars severrd cases of
small pox, It is so pronounced by
the' medical profession, and we must
j accept it as such. But as it is not fa
■ tal, ami as it exists in most ol the
j neighboring counties, will it be wise
; for Irwin to go to the heavy cxpcusi
j of guarding the patients in tii :
, own homes or isolating them in :•
j j pest-house? It is the same kind of
small pox that visited several see
j tions of the county last spring and
early summer, and which then went
under several names, the most
ular being “The Breaking Out” and
“Elephant Itch.”
If all the counties would-take
steps at once against its spread, ’
there would be some hope of work¬
ing effectually against it; but unless
this is done, it will be a waste of
time and money for any one county
to try to stamp it out within its bor
ders. The migratory element among
the negroes (and it is a large one)
makes it impossible to stamp out. the
disease in any county, bv isolation,
unless the movement is general
throughout the infected localities.
Chula is about twenty miles west
of Ocilla, is on the G. S. & F. rail
way, contains two or three stores, a 1
