?? heat Acreage.—The 8 an Francisco
Journal of Commerce says that three mil¬
lion acres of fall wheat have been
sown in California the past season. The
early farmers and abundant rains enabled the
to put in a full crop—a thing
which has not happened for years.
Burk wheal Ntriiw.—Buckwheatstraw,
which heretofore has been considered of
little value, has or late been utilized by
some of the Western farmers by chop¬
ping it fine and adding meal to it. A
small quantity fed to stock occasionally
would be relished, no doubt.
Brain Protection---The tile gate,
which is among recent inventions, is in¬

The gate is adjusted by being securely

the outlet as a barrier to vermin large

Clean Cattle Stables.— Keep the sta¬

filth morning from and scrape or card off all
the animals. The stables
should he made so warm that the
manure will not freeze at night. A
lower temperature will either demand a
larger amount of food or the animal will
fall oirin condition.
A Mistaken Idea.—Home people make
the mistake of giving the broods hatched
by two or more hens at once to a single
hen to nurse. If each hen hatched hut
one right or two chicks, then, of course, it is
ami proper to give them all to one
hen. Tint if each ben has hatched five

Ashes for Apple Trees.—^When ap¬

are very certain to be attacked by
iirserte. which if they were in healthy

Certain washes, such as lye ( a solution

water as will cover it; pour over it three
dissolved; pints of boiling then add water, and stir until

Shbi.l Cabinet.—T o construct a shell
cabinet, make a frame twenty inches
long at top, and fifteen inches at bottom;
the sides three and a half inches in
width or smaller, to suit one’s conven¬

handsomest ones in the center. After
you have made up your mind where to
place them, use putty to stick them on,
first heating and keening it warm all the
time. If it is too stiff put in a very lit¬
tle boiled linseed oil. After a little
practice one can tell when it is just
right. White lead already mixed can
be used, but 1 prefer the putty.

A Degenerate Mining Town.
There is no fun there any more. When

..suing pay over the monev, which he does by
a draft for the amount in favor
of the Government s credttor, out not
until after the warrant has been
countersigned by the proper-comptroller
and registered by the register. Indeed,
the draft itself must go to the register,
for comparison and registry before it is
finally deal passed over. There seems to be
a good of red tape in all this pro¬
cess, but is a sort of red tape that saves
the country money in the loog run.
A Stupendous Fish Story.
If it were not for the established repu
tation for truth enjoyed by the Talla
haasee Floridian, we would not believe
a tale it tells to its last number. It says
that recently, while a party of ladies
and gentlemen were boating on the
wonderful Wakulla Spring, one of the
ladies dropped a ring from her finger,
and it could be seen sinking in the clear
water. When it had reached a depth
far below the surface a trout was seen lo
make a dart for and swallow it, and
then for disappear. lost, Of course, it was given
up but an ingenious young man
ring, present fastened immediately it hook, borrowed another
to a and let down
his line into the cry stal water. A'ter
paying out about ninety feet of the line,
a trout was seen to approach the shin¬
ing bait, and finally mating a jump at
it, was transfixed. It was immediately it's
hauled up, cut open, and there lay in
stomach the lost ring.
