A Horrible Cremation.
During a conversation with Coro
ner Howry, our reporter ascertain
(fi that he had just returned from
Sulphur Springs, where he had
held nn inquest over the, body of a
white woman found near there
Sunday morning last, and to him
we are indebted for the following
facts :
On Sunday morning last strac
small children who were playing
along the railroad, near the 60th
mile post, found the charred re
mains of a white woman in a pile
of burning railroad ties.
As soon as the facts came to the
notice of some gentlemen who resides
near Sulphur Springs Coroner
L , nvry wa8 notified,
Proceeding to the place the fol
lowin K waB8Worn and an cx ‘
had: D. iAtntrad, fore
man ; J. M. Jiolins, J. <’. Brown
ing, A. M, Rucker, W. If. Camp
bell and A. V. Flanegan.
Besides the children wbo bad
found the body and wbo testified
to that fact, only one witness was
examined, who swore that on
Saturday last lie had seen the wo¬
man, in company with a man,
pass the depot. Jlo did not know
either. Afterwards lie saw them
pass hack, hut had not seen them
since. This was all the testimony
brought out, and left the case as
mysterious, if not more so, than
before.
The woman when found was ly¬
ing in a pile of cross-ties close be¬
side tho railroad. The ties had
evidently been placed over her and
then set on fire. There was no
evidence of any healing, shooting
or cutting and woman is supposed
to have burnt to death.
Near her was found a pack
playing cards and an old empty
pocket-book. She was dressed in
a dark calico dress, which had
been entirely torn away except
where her back came in contact
with tho ground. Her legs had
been burnt off abvove tho knees,
hut beside this tho woman was
apparently uninjured.
After hearing the above facts, the
jury rendered tho following verdict:
Gkouuia—IIam. County, Oct. 24,
1880.—We tho jurors summoned,
sworn and impaneled and charged
and after an examination of the
body of tho deceased and hearing
tho evidence in the case, we, the
jury believe that she was murdered,
burnt and placed in the position
she now is by some unknown per¬
son. Given under our hands and
seals. D. Licmond, Foreman.
