Rockdale Banner is its name.
And it is our purpose to make the
paper the equal if not the peer of
anv Georgia weekly. To do this
wo expect a liberal support from
our very generous public
The total number of inmates of
the penitentiary is given at 1,560.
The prohibition question is again
agitating the the people of Newton
count)'. A petition is being circu¬
lated to secure signers enough to
ask an election in December.
Some people believe that two
democratic tickets in New York
city will help the national dem¬
ocratic ticket, but others have quite
a different opinion.
Mr. Thurman spent Sunday with
Mr. Cleveland, at the President’s?
country home, “Oak View.” It is
proper to state right here that pol¬
itics did not enter into their con¬
versation
The other night, in IVest Virginia*
it will be remembered, a republican
slump speaker was pelted with rot
ton eggs. A few nights later, in
Harrisburg, Pa., a democratic
speaker was insulted in the same
manner.
It turns out that Patrick Ford,
the fierce editor of the Irish World,
was a deserter from the Union army
(luring the war. Ford quit fighting
before the war ceased, hut ever since
it was over he has been thirsting
for gore.
It is believed by those who claim
to know that Cleveland is certain
of New York, notwithstanding the
split between . Tammany and the
County Democracy. These two
organizations are everlastingly at
variance.
The American Forestry congress,
wpon invitation of the last legiela
lasure, will hold its annual session
in Atlanta a this year, convening
Nov. 29 and continuing several
days. Gov. Gordon will, in a few
day, appoint delegates to represent
Georgia in the congress.
Information from Alabama is to
the effect that the merchants all
over the State are greatly agitated
over the failure of the farmers to
bring in their cotton. Southern
farmers have absolutely declined to
use jute bagging at all, and are hold
ing their cotton in their gin houses,
waiting to find some way to get a
head of the cotton bageing trust.
Speaking of trusts and monopo¬
lies the writer differs widely with
some people. We hold that mer¬
chants are not dishonest as a class
simply because they are merchants,
nor are farmers honest simply be¬
cause as a class they are farmers.
If any of either class are dishonest
it comes from a different source.
And we venture a step further to
put it strongly, that one is not nec¬
essarily n good man becanse he be¬
longs to a good organization. Ho
ought to he, all will admit, but that
is quite a different question.
A diver in San Francisco, who
was engaged at $150 a day to go
down and examine the machinery
of the steamer City • of Chester,
which was sunk last August, Iras
thrown up the job. He took one
look at the vessel, and that satisfied
him. The first thing that met his
e) r e was the form of a man standing
with face distorted and tongue
hanging out of his mouth. The
body was swollen to twice its nat¬
ural size. Then he saw another
victim, on his knees, grasping a
third mau around the waist. The
diver got out of the water, reported
bis discovery to the officers, and
refused to listen to appeals to make
aiiditMHi trip.
