JOHN R. MADDOX Editor
One of Gen. Harrison’s close
friends says that he regards protec¬
tion Democrats as “Republicans in
sympathy,”.and will give them of¬
fices in the south in preference to
Republicans who are not talented
or respectable. Now, who bids?
The Macon library fund continues
to grow. The total is now $2,700
The people of Macon appreciate the
library, and the effort to build a
suitable home for the institution
will brobably succeed.
It is reported that the President's
message to Conereps this week will
be heavily charged with tariff-re¬
form powder. We hope that the
Democratic party will hold on to
thie as a party question. If so, we
sincerely believe it will soon be¬
come t. uly a national question, and
thus do great good in breaking
down that sectionism that has done
so much harm to this country,'and
especially the South. All pa*-ty
questions should be national, not
sectional.
The exposition has gieatly ad¬
vanced Augusta’s recognition as a
winter resort. A number of north¬
ern men have already made their
arrangements for spending the win¬
ter there. A prominent northern
gentleman who will spend the win¬
ter there remarked to a reporter
that a great futuie awaits Augusta
ns a resort for northerners. H» has
sent for his horses, and expects to
be joined by friends who were last
season in Thomasville. He partic¬
ularly admires the drives and char
asteristic scenery about Augusta.
The newspapers have told us that
the mineral and mnnufaetnring in¬
dustries of the south are booming.
The Baltimore Manufacturers' Re¬
cord, concerning the agricultural
interest says: “The south has
Wen blessed with two unprecedent¬
edly large corn and cotton crops in
•uccession, and this means greater
agricultural prosperity and more
surplus monev for investment.
Many millions of dollars that for¬
merly went west for corn and bacon
are now saved to the south by in¬
creased home production.” That’s
grand, glorious With mineral beds
giving up llieir treasures, spindles
humming, cribs cracking with corn
made on southern land, and pens
full of home-raised bogs, the south
can kiss her hand to the north as a
sign for a race for prosperity.
If lliere be any thing over an
other in particular that delights
and lejoices the heart of an editor
and adds increased speed to his rap¬
idly moving quill it is the pleasures
that thrill our emaciated anatomy
when w# undertake to proclaim the
enterprise of our people and the
wonderful improvements of our
town. On every hand may be seen
evidences of substantial growth and
progress. Old things, so to speak,
are passing away and the thrift of an
energetic people are pressing closely
in its steps. To lie particular, every
body seems to be imbued with the
same spirit, and it is not far dis¬
tant when Conyers will stamp her¬
self rightly as the foremost south¬
ern manufacturing city- All this
is evident, it is possible. And we
feel ch'jered with the hope and
promises of the future, and as for
ourselves we are planted in the fore¬
most lines and will ever sound
from the “old cil*4 - d” the onward
Diarches of our pjople. There is
everything in this town and sur¬
rounding country desirable 1o
make one happy, eontented, and
with the proper economy wealthy
l*eyond computation. So to
world and the balance of mankind
we open the gates aDd bid you u
glad welcome, and our benediction
to those among us is, be
and industrious, you are in the
den spot of the world.
Mrs. Harrison is the authority

near each other in Virginia, and
