The Income from the Farm,
Any business that does not pay our
incon.e over and above the expense
of carrying it should be abandoned
or improved. sn}B Hon. TV. J. Nor
then, in the Southern Cultivator,
Brain and mu-cle are too valuable
to be wasted year after year t0
maintain a scant sustenance and
an uncertain hold on life.
Farmers, like other men, should
not be content to continue work in
this field w ithout profitable results.
No man has discharged his duties
to himself, his rriends and his fel¬
lows until he reaches the possibili¬
ties in his power and becomes the
master of the business of b's choice.
No man who has tried it will say
there are no hindrances in the way
to an income from the farm. Tier*
are many, and some of them are se
rious. The question is: Can thev
be met and overcome? Some
them, such as the control and irn
provoment of on ■ lab* •, the sale ot
our products, the purchase of our
necessities, cannot be managed
successfully by individual effort.
These must be determined by co¬
operative action. If tire Farmers’
Alliance will do nothing more than
establish and maintain a standard
of Industry, faithfulness v , and mo.ai
character to which our labor must
be brought, and give us a system
ofdiscipline hv which this standard
shall he uniformly observed, it wi’l
bring mill-om fa-mers of*.
south that are now lost from idle¬
ness and from tneft. It can be
done, and I believe this organiza¬
tion will eventually effect:t. Then
the man who goes from one farm
to another will cai ’y wLh him a
reputation upon which his liv'ng
depends and by which the income
ot his employer is measured. The
improvement of our labor is the
first slop toward the increase of on
income.
W’hilc it it* strange that we expect
an increase fiom incompetent, in¬
sufficient idlers, it is equally strange
that we expeei to make nvmoy
from land u terdy exhausted of its
fertility. 7 'houtands of acres in
Georgia ave worked from year to
year that would ac oa 1 lv, in their
yields, not pay for the fi-st plowing
g’ven to them. Of »hat consum
inale fody we a e guilty when we
exjiend twelve months of industri¬

one week of service given 1 Poor
lands need not be abandoned ; if .'o
some ot us mi 0 ht be altogether
without. They «can be nnd they

ought to be imptovud. Many
methods of improvement have been
suggested—some of them good and
practical, others, expensive and
long-continued. I must believe,
however, that the best way to a
bale 0/ cotton m the acre, and. nnd
therefore, the beat income from the
farm, is through the ba:*n yard.
A rotation of crops is put upon the
land and it is improved, because it
gives off certain elements ab’d >-e
tains others, aLeraately. Still it
is a process of exliaustion. Green
crops may be put u{»on the land
for the purpose of being given event¬
ually and entirely to the soil.
These crops furnish ns no income
except such as comes subsequently
from the same soil after much time
has been expended in its recovery
and recujteration.
