The old year of 1888 is dying, dy¬
ing slowly, and in a few more days
will have rolled away with its im
hoiomec] joys and sorrows. Alost
of us have recorded pleasures that
will give us courage and inspira¬
tion along the rugged course of life.
And to some perhaps are .gashes
carved deep and fatal that will re¬
tain their hold so long as memory
assets her dominant sway. But to
each of us as living there is a duty,
an every day duty, that calls our
attention, and it should be the aim
of all to faithfully exclaim: “Up
and doing with a heart for any fate,
etc., as the poet beautifully puts
it, To the dying year with its vol¬
umes of recorded and unrecorded
events we can but believe that what
vasbest has happened, though in
rnany cases it has seemed severe.
