A RATTLESNAKE’S HEART.
"While a number of
were discussing the question
whether consumption could be
cured or. not, one of them made
the following - extraordinary state
nient:
“I am positive, from an exp or i
ence of my own, that the dread
disease can be cured. When I
was about twenty years old I suf

worst form. One day an old man
said to me: ‘If you will swallow a

cured.’
“I was inclined at first not to try
tlie old man's cure, but as I grew
more weak I could not get the

the man where he had left it. On
learning the location I ran eagerly
to the spot on the hillside and
saw what to most people
would have been a repulsive ob
ject, but to me, at that time, see
ed a, literal fountain of youth. I
took the rattler home and, with
the excuse that I wanted the fat
and oil from the rattler, induced
my father to skin it. He did so,
and as soon as he cut open the

TABLE CONVERSATION.
Benjamin Franklin says of liis
in his autobiography: “At
table he liked to have, as often
he could, some sensible friend
neighbor to converse with, and
took care to start some
topic for discourse, which
might tend to improve the minds
of his children.’’ This shows
and forethought on the
of the parent, which are es
sential to redeem conversation at
table from mere chatter of
gossip. In too many
meal-time is reserved for
out all the complaints and
ammoyances which mar the day,
or for discussing anxious house
hold problems. In others the food
is hastily swallowed in compara
tive silence, while the father, por
is absorbed in reading tlie
newspaper. Children brought up
in such an atmosphere are certain
to be constrained and awkward
when invited to sit at other tables
than their own. Nowhere are bon
mots better appreciated than
around the family board, andluip
py the homes in which one of its
members is blessed with a gift of
refined humor, to be used when
they break Bread together! Plato
says that “all men, well questioned
answer well;” and parents who are
too busy to devote much time to
this matter of conversation at the
table, can at least train the
dren to ask intelligent
on topics cf current interest.—Ex.

Many who stand irresolute
where meet the paths of right and
wrong, and consider with a moral
vacillation all too common, the
prizes offered for those who fol
low in the train of Pleasure or in
the sterner ways of Duty, consider
but one possibility in summing up
the penalties of vice, and that is:
Discovery. Fools that they are
they do not stop to think that no
man can deceive himself or can
veil his sins from that prevailing
Justiee which is above us all.
Every man who, knowing the
right, chooses the wrong path,
finds himself day by day separated
farther and farther from the better
self from which he took leave
at the first step. Like the lovers,
whose pathetic story is told in
Jean Ingelow’s touching poem,
“Divided,” he may laugh across
the rill which trickles between the
pure and the corrupted man,
it widens until the landscape
broken, then the voice of tlie past
grows faint, and at last, when
both stand upon the brink of tlie
awful ocean of the beyond, he
strains his eyes across the rushing
current and wonders if the speck
upon the other side could ever
liave been himself.
Think, if you will, of all that
passes in the mind of a man thus
divorced from purify and light,
and ask yourself if discovery is,
indeed, the only punishment or if
he needs a hell worse than that of
his own creating. Think of the
survival after the glamour is all
gone, after every cup has been
drained, after the age of senti¬
ment has departed and only the
diabolism of passion is left. One
must be young indeed to be de¬
ceived by the machinery of the
charter of life. Think of being
compelled to live in it after the
lights are turned but and dark
ness mocks the vast temple of
gaiety.—Detroit Free Press.

USE OF THE COTTON SEED
The Bnakers’ Monthly give ns
lively sketch:
“Was there ever such a history
that of the cotton seed? For
years despised as a nui
and burned or dumped as
then discovered to be the
very food for which the soil was
hungering, and reluctantly ad
mitted to the rank of utilities,
shortly afterwards found to be
nutritions food for beasts, and
thereupon treated with something
like respect. One admitted to
the circle of farm industries, - it
was found to hold thirty-live gal
Ions of pure oil to the ton, worth
in its crude state $14 to the ton,
or $40,000,000 for the whole crop
of seed.
“But then a system was de
vised for refining the oil up to a
value of one dollar a gallon, and
the frugal Italian placed a cask of
it at the root of every olive tree,
and then defied the Bureau Breath
of the Alps. And then experience
showed that the ton of cotton
seed was a better fertilizer and a
better stock food when robbed of
its thirty-five gallons of oil, than
before; that the hulls of the seeds
made the best of fuel for feeding
the oil-mill engine; that the ashes
of tlie hulls scooped from the eu
gine’s draught had the highest
commercial value of potash, and
that the “refuse" of the whole
made the best and purest soap
stock, to carry to the toilet the
perfumes of Lubin or Colgate."
