CONYERS, GEORGIA, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1889.
Tliere are alwa J s a S reat number
of such people on board. Some
said lie straight on your face,
others said lie straight on your
back. Both did very well, per¬
haps; at least, after administering
several long doses of each, I Avent
to sleep and never awoke until
about clay next morning.
J uly G.—Getting up a little af¬
ter sunrise, Henderson and I Avent
on deck, feeling better than the
evening before, but not at all nat
ural. Henderson was pretty sick
a 11 day, while I, though not to
say sick, was reeling like a drunk¬
en man all day; and towards eve¬
ning came to the conclusion that
there is as much prose as poetry
in “plowing the foam of the bond¬
ing main.” At dinner Ave had
fresh cod fish. It Avas the first I
had ever eaten, and w r as good;
that is, it would have been good,
had I possessed an appetite for
anything. This Avas at 4 o’clock
p. m. I did not go to tea at 7; but
sat down and wrotfe in my diary.
“It seems very absurd to me—yes,
provokingly absurd—that a Avell
person should be called on to go
to the table five times a day, there
to be served with four courses
each.” Doubtless, in my annoy
ance, I forgot that at 7 a. m. and
12 m. Ave had only one, or at
most only tAvo courses. These
were the meals for each day: por
ridge at 7 a. m.; breakfast at 9 a.
m.; lunch at 12 noon; dinner at
4 p. m.; and tea at 7 p. m.. A feAv
attended all the meals, but for the
firsiseveral days Henderson and
I could appear, Avith any degree
of profit, only at the principal
ones—breakfast, dinner, and tea.
The fog covered us all day during
the sixth. We saw our first por
poises jn the afternoon. We had
a most pleasant rest during the
whole night, and felt that we Avere
indeed being “rocked in the cra¬
dle of the deep.”
July 7 —We awoke next morn¬
ing feeling more natural, and
found the fog almost gone, which
had coA r ered us all the Avay from
NeAV York. Then I saw for the
first time the deep blue sea as it
really is, a representation of which
is so often attempted in Avorks of
art, but so seldom attained. The
water looked almost as blue as
ink, and upon the tops of the
waves were snow-white crests of
foam and spray.

aAvay out in mid ocean are much
more social than on land; in six
days sailing they get better ae

hors in a city do in six months,
Three days are sufficient to make
a complete flirtation, and six a
match; while it would take so
many months when merely neigh

and myself were young men, and
therefore we know, not that we
ever tried such a thing—by no

Sunday, July S— This was a
beautiful Sabbath "day, out upon
a world of waters, with the pale
blue sky above and the dark blue
sea beneath. The day was ex¬
ceedingly pleasant, and the pas¬
sengers spent all their time talk¬
ing and eating. I mention this,
not because it was anywise dif¬
ferent from what they did every
day, but because they seemed to
do more of it that day than usual.
Nothing disturbed them in their
common occupations, except two
religious services of an hour each,
one beginning at 11 a. m., and the
other at 7 p. m. These were con¬
ducted by an Episcopal minister,
whom we called the “the parson' 1
thenceforth. He Avon his title by #
his style. He would tell even an
insignificant anecdote with such
grandiloquence as Avould have
been too formal for an address
before her majesty, the Qeeu of
England. And then the Episco¬
pal hymn and tune book, out of
which Ave tried to sing, was filled
with tunes among which Old
Hundred would have sounded
quite modern.
It was on this day that avo saAV
some of those strange travelers of
the deep called flying fish. They
would dart from the crest of one
wave to that of another with al¬
most the swiftness of a bullet,
sometimes flying over several
waves.
Monday, July 9—-On Monday
morning we found ourselves in
disagreeable weather, with cold
wind and rain. About 12 o’clock
the wind shifted to the east, mak
mg a head wind. Tho sails were
