Mr. Walter Wood's mare, Mar¬
line Roy, in the recent trotting
race at Machen, out trotted
everything on the track, and there
were some twenty horses in the
race, some of which were rated as
low as 2 25. Taking into consid¬
eration the excellent qualities of
of this mare and hertrottiug ca¬
pacity, Mr. Wood has one of the
finest mares in the state. She is
perfectly safe, and even a small
child might drive her without be¬
ing in any danger.
PERRY HANGED.
Yesterday at 11:48 o’clock the
sheriff of DeKalb county sprung
the trigger and H. S. Perry, the
murderer of Bely Lanier at Deca¬
tur last March, dropped into eter¬
nity. Perry displayed wonderful
nerve throughout the whole pro¬
ceedings. His remains will be
buried to-day at Auburn, Ga., in
the family burying ground of bis
wife’s people.

SCHOOL OPEN.
The Conyers Public School
opened last Monday morning with
180 pupils, and it is probable that
this number will be increased con¬
siderably as the term progresses.
It is reasonable to judge from this
favorable beginning that the com¬
ing year will be one of unequaled

success in the four years history

Each department is well filled,
both as to teachers and pupils,
and Prof. Stark, the superinten¬
dent, has every thing well arran¬
ged and may be congratulated up¬
on the good work which the open¬
ing shows he has done.
Miss Minnie Smith, Miss Linda
Holder and Miss Stafford all
taught in the school last term and
did good work, and it was a wise
step the school board made in se¬
lecting them for this term. Miss
Alice Martin, of Hopewell, is the
only new teacher, and it is said
that she is a most excellent teach¬
er as well as a young lady of cult¬
ure and refinement.
Conyers can boast of as good
schools as can be found anywhere
in the state, outside of college
cities.
THE END IS NOT EAR OFF.
So says a wiseacre from the
Green mountains of Vermont,who
says his name is R. W. Rodgers
and styles himself “The Noah of
To-day.” He says he is sent of
God to forewarn the people of the
coming end of the world, which
he claims will be one year from
next October. The first warning
of the end of time, he says, will
be in October and one year fro/ii
that time the chosen few will be
gathered at Jerusalem, numbering
one hundred and forty and four
thousand. Rodgers says all this
was told him in a vision in 1893,
and he is now exhorting the peo¬
ple of Kansas to give up their
churches and believe as lie does
and be saved, teaching them that
the end will be gradual and all
will know it and have time to re
pent. If Rodgers should hit
Georgia, it would take but a short
time to have him translated to
a “Jerusalem” at Milledgeville.
THAT “COURT HOUSE RING.”
COMMUNICATED.
“Oh, that hateful court house
ring! I do despise to go by there.
They say those hateful loafers just
make hateful remarks about eyery
woman or girl that passes there.
I am afraid to pass there—I wish
there wasn’t a chair in Conyers
that that nasty crowd of loafers
could get.”
Such was a part of a conversa¬
tion I heard a short time ago.
How such an idea ever got started
I can’t imagine. That such men
as compose the county officials,
the legal fraternity, independent
merchants and citizens, with some
of our best preachers, who are the
fathers, husbands, sons and broth
ers 0 f our beloved women, would
do such a thing, or permit it done,
is contemptible to insinuate.
Such report could, . . , have only ,
a
originated & in the base, low, polit- x
ical trickster or over fanatical
fool, who wants to control things
and can’t boss this crowd.
Please let me say once for all,
that the “court house ring” has
our women and girls in high re
spect, and treats them with great¬
er courtesy than the crouds that
mass in front of our churches
every Sabbath day. Our women
need have no fear in passing the
court house. There may be places
in Conyers more disreputable.

MAY BE A LYNCHING.
A special from Atlanta to the
Macon Telegraph Tuesday, says:
Walter Brooks, a Newton coun¬
ty negro, was arrested here last
night, charged with assault on a
young colored girl The crime
was committed last week in New¬
ton and the fellow afterwards es¬
caped to this city. It is quite
probable that Brooks may be
lynched as the negroes of his
neighborhood are greatly incen¬
sed against him.“
