CONYERS, GA., SEPT. 16, 1897
Athens already has one
knitting factory and will soon
have another. If such things
pay in other places, they
would pay in Conyers.
Floyd county wants the
fish hatchery which the gov¬
ernment will establish in
Georgia, and every effort is
being made to secure it.
The old confeds and others
are becoming active jn urging
that the governor appoint Col.
Milledge as librarian. They do
not like the talk about Brown’s
appointment and say that it
shall be given to Milledge.
The Gov. announces that he
will not make the appointment
untill the legislature meets,—
Rome Tribune.
Of the 800 misdemeanor
convicts illegally confined in
private camps in Georgia,
300 have already been lawless un¬
shackled from their
bondage and put to work on
the public roads of the coun¬
ties which convicted them.
It is only a matter of little
time now until the camps
which still exist will also be
a thing of the past. Let the
good work go on.
A move in the right di¬
rection has been made by
leading negroes of Texas,who
have called a convention of
their race to meet at Colum¬
bus, October 2, to protest,
not against lynching, but a
gainst the crime which is so
often its cause. The thought¬
ful negroes of the south can
use their influence in no bet¬
ter way than this, With
fewer criminal assaults there
will be fewer mob execu¬
tions. —Atlanta Journal.
Terrilble tales are coming
from Alaska about the pros¬
pectors who are attempting
to get through to the gold
fields of the Klondike, but
they are nothing to the stor¬
ies we may expect to read
three or four months from
now. Winter has not set in.
The weather will begin to get
cold on tho Yukon about the
first of October, Fifteen
days from that time ice will
form in the rivers, and a few
days later the zero weather
will begin. In the midst of
the cold season the tempera¬
ture often drops to 40 and 50
degrees below zero and when
that period arrives, there will
be death and desolation on
the trail.
The Monroe cotton mill is
on a boom and doing more to
build up Monroe than all of
her other enterprises put to¬
gether. Conyers discussed
the matter of building a cot¬
ton ^lonroe factory at the same time
did. Conyers let it
drop and Monroe went ahead
and built—now think of that
little city three years ago and
look at it to-day, and it will
convince anv one that our
•j
town lost a good opportunity
to build herself up. It is
not too late yet, and with
the real facts thrown out be¬
fore us and the wonderful suc¬
cess of our sister city, we fail
to see why any business man,
or set of men, don’t take the
matter in hand and build a
cotton mill in Conyers.
The editor of the Amer
icus Times Recorder, who is
a woman, is a believer in wo¬
men protecting their honor
in person and, if necessary,
kill the villain who would
assail her. The Times Re¬
corder says : L C The laws of
this country give the woman
a right to protect her honor,
and the editor of the Times
Recorder, who is a women,
advises them to do it in per¬
son. It is truly the safest
and surest way out of the
difficulty. Spurn the villian
with silent contempt or kill
him. In either instance no
harm can come to the woman.
The Times-Reeorder cites
the reid case to justify its po¬
sition.
Gradually the price of sugar
is being forced up—or rather
run up for the trust does not
have to force up sugar, hav¬
ing everything its own way.
Sugar which sold at wholesale
for 4 cents shortly before the
passage of the new tariff bill
is now quoted at 5J with still
further advances in prospect
in the near future. At the
rate of advance which has
been going on recently it will
not be a great while before
the workingman who takes
sugar in his coffee will have
to pay 10 or 12 cents a pound
for it. However the South
Atlantic states have it in
their power to stop tribute
to the trust. The people
of this section have raised
cane and made their own
sugar before now and they
can do it again.—Savannah
News.
E. C. Flanagan, the mur¬
derer of Mrs. Allen and Miss
Ruth Slack, in DeKalb coun¬
ty, broke jail at Decatur last
Tuesday night and is still at
large. The front door of the
jail was open and in Flana¬
gan’s cell was a note written
by him saying, among other
things, that he had made a
key with which to unlock the
door Flanagan was never
crazy and on account of the
delay ofjustice ihe redhand¬
ed villian is now a free man.
This matter of playing with
justice must be stopped, and
until it is stopped and the law
is enforced more promptly,
those men in whose hands
is entrusted the execution of
the law may expect the peo¬
ple to take the law in their
own hands and lynch every
criminal of Flanagan’s stripe,
regardless ot the tact that it
is wrong and of what govern¬
or Atkinson, or any other
man, may do or say against
lynching.
Later. —Flanigan was found
in an unused cell in the jail
yesterday morning, but had
his plans well arranged to
escape at night. He is now
safe in jail again and will
hang pretty soon, if the su
preme court does uot send
him to the asylum,
