Commissioner Nesbitt’s Inquiry
Box For the Month.
liuRilo Hur.
Question.—I enclose a plant for iden¬
tification. It catne up in my garden,
where I planted a paper of lettuce seed.
It is something like the horse nettle, as
you see. Is it good for anything?
Answer.— The weod is what is known
as the Buffalo Bur (solanum rostra
tum). Its native home is the western
plains north of Mexico, whence it has
traveled slowly towards the. east, until
now it is fouud in every state in the
Union, though still quite rare in Geor¬
gia. This plant differs from the horse
nettle in having yellow flowers, instead
of white, and bears thorny bnra, in¬
stead of smooth, yellow berries like the
nettle. It is an annual and propagated
only by the seed, which are not as nu
merous as in most troublesome weeds.
It is absolutely good for nothing and
you should destroy every plant you see,
before the seeds mature and are carried
to other places by sticking to any ani¬
mal that may brush against them.—State

J.amt Struck by Lightning.
Question. —What will restore lend
that has been struck by lightning, and
how long will it take ?
Answer.— There is a prevalent belief
that where the gronnd is struck by
lightning it is rendered sterile and un¬
productive for years. This is au error
which any one by close observation can
deteat. When a portion of a growing
crop, such as cotton, is struck by light¬
ning, all the plants which receive a
share of the electric current are. of
oourse, killed, aud it is possible, and
even probable, that chemical changes
take place iu the ground receiving the
onrreut that render it barren aud un¬
productive for a short time. This con¬
dition has been noticed by every farmer,
1 suppose, but continued observation
would also have shown that the stricken
spot gave no evidence of sterility the
following year. By that time, what¬
ever harm had been done to the land by
the lightning, will have been remedied
by the forces of nature, which are con¬
stantly at work, amlsshe ground will bo
restored to its original fertility.—State
Agricultural Department.

I have traveled over much of the state
in the past month, mid from observa¬
tion aud reports my impression is th»t
this crop is as good as the laud can
make iu North Georgia, flrstrate in
Middle Georgia and good in the soutn
•m portion of the state. In the latter
section the crop being more advanoe^.,
suffered to a considerable extent from
the dry weather in June, but still a
sufficiency has been made there. The
present crop will be far in excess of thut
of last year, and if not wasted will be

FRUIT.
Apples, some grapes and a few quinces
are all the fruits yet ungathered, and
these have all been injured by the late
wet weather. The crops of both peaches
and watermelons have been small this
year, but the growers have realized
some money from them and appear to
be well satisfied with the results. The
damage from various insect pests has
become so great aud so general that
every farmer who raises fruit, if only
for family use, should interest himself
in getting the legislature to appoint a
State entomologist, through whose ef¬
forts the loss from this source may be
stopped or at least diminished. If some
step in this direction is not taken, and
that very soon, the fruit industry iu
this state must rapidly decline.
STOCK.
With the exception of a few reports
of cholera among hogs, and some red
water among cattle, the condition of
stock is good throughout the state.
