THE POPULISTS.
Mr. J. Ij. Chupp, of DeKalb
county, who was a Populist
didate for state senator from this
senatorial district two years ago
against, Mr. Morrison, the Dome
cratic candidate, has again aligned
himself with the Democrats and
is now a member of the Demo¬
cratic executive committee of De
Kalb county.
Iu every we
nouuce the return of some distin
guished Populist, sometimes whole
counties, to the Democrats.
With the loss of such men us
Hon. Thomas K. Watson, the
brainest and purest leader ever
connected with Populism; Hon.
Thus. E. Winn, who is being com¬
mended all over Georgia lor that
patriotic letter to the Populists,
which appeared in the News-Her¬
ald a few weeks ago; ox-Populist
candidate for governor Seaborn
Wright; member of the state Pop¬
ulist executive commit toe, Bar¬
rett; and Chupp of DeKalb, what
remaineth to convince any man
that the Populist party of Geor¬
gia, bo far as ever getting office is
concerned, is dead? Wo under¬
stand that some of the Populists
in this county are chuckling over
our idea that the Populist par'y of
this county is going to pieces. You
needn’t to laugh, brother Populist.
It is only a short time till you
will have to return to the Demo¬
crats or join the KepublLuns.
Where were your leading Populists
in your last state convention?
Why weren’t Hon. Mel Branch id
Columbia county, Judge Hines,
ex-candidate for governor, Mc¬
Gregor of Thompson, MelntlTy of
Jackson, and many other of your
Populist leaders there? They know
too well that there is no hope for
Populism, and no longer any
to continue the light.
The majority of the Populists of
this county are good citizens, and
are deeply interested in the man¬
agement of our county, slate and
national affairs, and what’s the
use of their disfranchising them
selves by staying oil in u little
crowd, whose strength is never
strong enough to accomplish what
they desire? Of course, they are
not disfranchised =o far as voting
in the general election is concern
ed, but the Democratic primary
has been tin real field of contc t
i". th 1 south ever since the Civil
War, and it is going to remain so;
therefore, why should any man
align himself with a party which
is not allowed tu vote in the pri
mary where overv county, state,
and national issue is settled, for
.he ..f 1,0,...
less minority in the geniral elec
tion? In the next general elec
tion in this state, evefT candidate
from constable to governor will
have been named, and every do
maud that the Democrats want
wilt be ou lined in a platform,
and every Populist vote to the
contrary w ill not amount to a fur
thing. You can stand aloof from
theD mocratic nrimnrv l see mnnv ‘
men get office that you may not
desire, see issues settled in which
you are deeply interested, yet the
only glory you are able to get out
of your position is the privelegeof
casting your ballot for a hopeless
cause. The Populists claim that
the Democrats have stolen their
plabforn . If so, what further ne¬
cessity .s there for a continuance
of their party? Why not have a
reunited Democracy, and present a
bolder front to the common enemy,
the Republicans? Who is respon¬
sible for so many negroes being
put into office in eoig..i. 1
,
is a white man’s state, the major
ity of the people are white, and
every office, great or small, ought
to be held by white men. Yet the
Postmaster of Athens is a negro,
and there are hundreds of subor¬
dinate offices in the state held by
negroes. Who is responsible?;
Did the Democrats over put a ne
iuto office iu Georgia? No. It
the Populists had voted solidly for
Win. J. Bryan in the last presi
dontuil election, ho would be the
president today, instead of Mr.
McK'nley, mid the head of t he In¬
ternal Revenue department, and
all the other officers in tho
state except those under tho civil
service where they cannot be re¬
moved except for incompeteney,
would be hold by white men .
As tho Populist party is rapidly
disintergrating, in fact it seems
that there are going to be two Pop¬
ulist candidates for president, let
the white people ot tho south unite
under the common banner of De¬
mocracy, settle all issues inside
her ranks, and let that union,
peace, and prosperity reign which
has over been characteristic of the
Southern people.— Lawreneeville
News-llerald.
The Democratic Primary.
The primary election is not quite
one week off and it will bo one of
the most in important because elections of ever the
held the stat.o
great number of candidates to be
voted for. This time the names
of every candidate will be printed
on one ticket from Governor down
to Coronor and where tic re are
more than one candidate running
for the same office the voter will
have to scratch ali but the on he
wants to vote for.
Voters will therefore have to be
exceedingly careful to runningex¬ scratch off
all names of candidates
cept the 011 c he wants to v< to for.
There will lie about 37) r 40
names of candidates on tho t’eket
and only 0110 name can be counted
for each office. 1111 lie case of judg¬
es, if one of the candidates is not
stricken by the voter, neither of
them can be counted.
