LETS HAVE HARMONY.
Now that the elections arc all
over aud the people’s choice have
been chosen to serve the county
for the next two years, let every¬
body lay aside politics and be so¬
cial and as friendly as ever. While
it is true that there has be&n no
wrangling as in some elections,
but on account of the number of
candidates in the field, most every
persou had some friend for whom
they voted aud worked for and in
this instance some feelings might
have arisen therefrom. Lets all
get down to business and be as
friendly ae we should- Rockdale,
though small in size, is the best
county in the State aud every¬
thing should move in harmony.
The offioers elected are the peo¬
ple’s choice and should meet the
approval of every citizen of Rock¬
dale. Every defeated candidate
should get their wounds healed as
soon as possible and put their
Bhoulder to the wlnel and push
for the upbuilding of Rockdalo
county.
THE RECENT PRIMARY.
The white people of Georgia have
named the men into whose hands
they desire to place the affairs of
the state for the next two years,
and very generally throughout the
state county officers have been
chosen as well. As there will be
no more elections until late full
we Bhall now have a long rest from
politics and can devote our time to
busiuess crops, fishingand the like.
The election of the 15th was re¬
markable in many respects. It was
the first time since the lylvenb of
populism that the white people of
the county have acted together pol¬
itically with practical unamimity,
and the returns as printed in the
Banneii last Wednesday indicate
clearly that there is but one white
mans party in the comity.
Another noteworthy feature of
the primary was the adseuce of
disorder of any kind. So far as
the reports show it was a fair clean
tight throughout the state. There
were many heated contests in this
congressional district boiuo of
them so close th&t it took the otfi
uial couutto determina them. I’ho
people of the state were evidently
satisfied in the manner in which
the state house is conducting, for
there was no oppositon to a single
state house officer. 1 he only
new face to be seen in the Capital
officers where the term of the pres
ent eucnmbereuts expire will be
that of Capt. R. E. Park who will
assume the duty of State Treasure,
-J
succeeding Mr. W. J. Speer who
did not offer for re-election.
The Georgia delegation in Con¬
gress has also been returned in¬
tact, while Senator Bacon was re¬
warded for his services at Nation¬
al Capital with a unanimous re
election .
To the victors the Banner ex¬
tends congratulations and the hope
that they will perform the duties
with credit and honor to themsel¬
ves and profit to their constituents.
the defeated; suggests the con
that they were beat in a
fair fight before their white fellow
and we wish for them all
better fortune next time.
“SPLIT” POPULIST CONVEN¬
TION.
At Cincinnati, on May 10, 1900,
the “split” Populists adopted a
platform substantially in line
with the wants and demands of
the people, but by their denuncia¬
tion of all other platforms and
parties and a separate organization
prevent the maintenance of the de¬
sired principles. The history of
the result of this ill-advised course
will abundantly show where the
“sham” lies.
The following is the “split”
platform:
The people’s party of the Uni¬
ted States, assembled in national
convention, this 10th day of May,
1900, affirming our unshaken be¬
lief in the cardinal tenets of the
people’s party as set forth in the
Ounvha. platform, do adopt, and
proclaim this declaration of faith :
1. Wo demand the initiative
and referendum.
2. We demand the public owner¬
ship and operation of those means
of communication, transportation
and production which the people
may elect, such as railroads, tele¬
graph and telcphoue lines, coal
mines, etc.
8. The land, including all natu¬
ral sources of wealth, is a heritage
of the people, and should not be
monopolized for speculative pur¬
poses.
-1. A scientific and absolute pa¬
per money, based upon the entire
wealth and population ofthe nation
not redeemable in any specific
commodity, it is the best currency,
but unt il secured we favor the free
and unlimited coinage of both sil¬
ver and gold at the ratio of 16 to 1.
5, We demand the levy and col¬
lection of a graduated tax incomes
and inheritances.
(j. We demand the election of
president, vice president, federal
judges aud United State senators
by direct vote of the people.
7. We are opposed to trusts and
declare that the contention be¬
tween the old part ies on thomono
poly question is a sham battle and
, that no solution of this mighty
problem is possible w ithout the
j adoption of t he principles of nub
fie ownership of public utilities,

Under the caption “Parson’s Pa¬
ragraphs,” Rev. R. Toombs Du
Bose has been contributing some
well written paragraphs to the
Athens Banner. Among many
other things he writes : 1 Georgia
lias not the prestage abroad that
she had when the Cobbs, the Lump¬
kins, the Crawfords, the two Ste¬
phens, Jenkins and others of that’
day represented her, and it is be¬
cause our poverty immediately af¬
ter the war forced the brain of the
state into narrow channels, where
it was dwarfed. The consequence
is we have a lot of small pegs in
big holes.”
The Populists of Georgia are
rapidly returning to the Democ¬
ratic party. Says the Cartersville
Advocate: ‘ ‘And still they come.
The populists of Schley county
met in mass meeting last Saturday
to discuss the advisability of put¬
ting out a county ticket. The
chairman and secretary resigned
on the assembling of the meeting,
stating that they would go into
the Democratic ranks and were fol¬
lowed by all but fourteen of the
delegates, who now constitute the
Populist party of that county.”

The following from the Weekly
Madisonian is absolutely a true
photograph of the fact; although
we have no wife, yet sisters are
just as equivalent in this case:
“Did you ever try to set out
flowers for your wife? If not then
you have missed one of the expe¬
riences of life. It is something
like this. You get your hoe and
announce ready. She points out
the spot. You commence, when
she says, ‘Not there’—with the
emphasis on the ‘there’—‘a little
further on’—you go a little fur¬
ther on—then it is ‘Not there’
again, but ‘the other way.’ You
start, when it is ‘Not that way, the
other way.’ You change and mild
ly and , meekly ask it that , . s the
place, and then she says, ‘No, but
it will have to do’—intimating
thafc owing to your stupidity she
is fortunate to get it planted any¬
where anyway. If you think this
overdrawn , try it some day ami be
convinced. • •
