THE SAN JOSE SCALE 1T1IVO INSECT NOTES BY TUB DEPARTMENT O 9 ENTOMOLOGY. KEROSENE OIL TREATMENT l»B*»«*aUy Recovering From tbe of the Application—How ; wd When to Admlnlater. DfflTARTRENT OF ENTOMOLOGY, Atlanta, Ga., July, 1900. |Bt W. M. Soott,State Entomologist.) The San Josf. Scale.— This pent i» now gradually recovering from the shock it received by the treatment to "Stand Oil cock-tails,” which flowed so freely through the infested orchards last winter, in spite of the high price of this oily article. The continuous rains of the past month, however, have greatly re¬ tarded the multiplications of the San Jose scale and millions of the little crea¬ tures have been brought forth into ex¬ istence only to be quickly washed from the trees and drowned. MeanwMle the mothers, apparently realizing the peril at their newly born young have decreas¬ ed their daily quota of new livee and re¬ linquished for a space their claim to the nlost prolific animals in existence. The estimate of 8,216,080,400 insects ae the annual descendants from one individual female will fall far short this season, thanks to the rains; "it is an ill wind that blows good to no ono. ” But unfor¬ tunately those rains have como at a season when the fruit, crop is at its vul¬ nerable point, and rot among the poaches, induced by the damp weather, is doing considerable damage. Now that the fruit crop is being rap¬ idly removed from the trees, it behooves every man who owns premises infested w-ith the San Jose scale to prepare for a summer treatment. As Soon as the fruit crop is gathered infested trees should be sprayed with 10 per cent, kerosene in mechanical mixture with water. Of the two keroseno pumps now ou the market, one made by tho Doming Co., Salem, Ohio, the other by the Goulds Mfg. Co., Seneca Falls, N. Y., the latter is more reliable and the writer recommends it in preference to the former. Particular erne should be taken in the use of kerosene as a summer wash, as there Is always more or less danger of Injury to the trees sprayed. Not over 10 per c' nt. should be used and the leaves should not be left dripping. In our ex¬ periments with this remedy it was noted that, notwithstanding great oare, some of the peach leaves wore scorched around tho 'margins and when partiole* of keroseno lodged on a leaf it burnt lit¬ tle “shot-holes” through it; but this slight injury did not result in permanent damage to tho trees. Every part of th« body and limbs should be thoroughly moistened with the spray but no attempt should bo made to drench the leaves, for the reason referred to above. It i* truo that tho scale occurs in great num¬ bers on the leaves as well as tho bark of the tree, but they cannot be satisfac¬ torily destroyed by giving the foliago a thorough spraying without doing con¬ siderable damage. Furthermore, when the leaves shed iu the fall, and die, th« scale insects infesting thotn will like¬ wise porish. This summer treatment is by no means sufficient. It must bo followed in tho fall, as soon as tho foliage is shed, by an application of 20 per cent, kero¬ sene. The fall or winter treatment can be applied muoh more thoroughly than the summer treatment, as the foliage ii then out of the way. To obtain good results every portion of the infestod tree must bo wet from the ground to the tips of the twigs, but euro should be taken uot to allow the kerosene to run down and collect about t ho baso of the tree. Lost winter a number of trees were kill ed by such carelessness.
