The New6 gives sufficient reasons
why the people of Lincoln couny
are prosperous: “We will tell you
why it is tha' Lincoln oounty is so
prosperous and well to do. It is be¬
cause the men and woman are so full
of vim and energy, so full of honest
industry, with no false pride among
them”
Whatever may be the propriety of
labor union, one thing is sure:
When they seek to control the
actions of non-union laborers they
beeorne inimical to the rights of both
person and properly, atid should be
dealt with to the extremity ot the
law Any giveu man has a perfect
right, humanly speaking to work or
not work as his tastes or in’erests
may dictate; but lie has no right to
say that his neighbor shall net take a
job which he has refused. It there is
such a thing as supremacy of law in

Rev. Dr Tucker, in the Chmtain
Index w, 11 says that the race line was
not laid down by men, but by the
Almighty; and human attempts to
wipe it out have led to trouble, as
might have been known before-hand.
What we should,do now is, 1. To
recognize tho race line as an estab¬
lished fact. 2. To protect the weak
or race and do what we can to pro¬
mote its well being. Our motto is
this: Scperato rac°s. with friendly
relation. This will be acceptable to
both parties, the reverse to neither
This is certainly a most admirable
and concise platform, upon which all
kindreds and races under heaven
should gladly stahd and “rejoice it'
tho hope oi the glory of God,’’ and
labor for the greatest possible good
to all. This is certainly in 1 armony
with the spirit and mission of the.
Divine miivler.
HARP’S HARDSHIPS.
EVvoral weeks ago the town of Con¬
yers was tl row ninto a slate of excite¬
ment over the peculiar chastisement
of A. Harp, a newspaper man
of that place. It w ill be remembered
that, according to report, he was taken
liom tlie house ot a negress by
several disguised parties and painted
black and red, as also wasauogio
man who was in the habit of frequents
iog the home ol the same ncgio wo¬
man. After having receivtd this puns
ishment, Harp and the woman soon
shook the dust of Conyers from their

late much complaint has been mad*
to the police by citizens living near
the medical college of a suspicious
couple living in that locality, and cap
taiiv ILgby decided to investigate
the matter. Accordingly abont 2
o’c’ock yesterday morning he sought
the house and found it. He rapped
on the door and asked admit'ance,
which was at firs' refused, but
wards giauted. While awaiting
trauce, however, Captain Daghy heard
a considerable fuss as it some one was
climbing over paititiou. On cn’eting,
no one save the w oman w as to be seen.
Casting his eves upward, he saw- a
white man disrobed standing on two
rafters, and ordered him from
elevated, though awkward position.

conduct. Au investigation of the case
yesterday morning before Recorder
Glean developed the fact that the

furnished so much excitement recently
at Conyers. After hearing the evi -
denoe a fine of $50 was imposed upon
Harp, who, in default of payment’ was

Church work and meetings will
run smoothly enough as long as every
member is will.ng to admit that he ; s
a sinner. Tue very minute, howevet
tha' eith r man or woman becomes
sinless er perfeot, yon are bound to
to h ivetrouble. No one can so quick
get up a first-class row in a church as
a man who is so awi’ully good that
he ought to have gone to heaven
years ago. He is Larder to keep
quiet than a swann of hornets
with a fire under their nest. L
seems a paradox, but it is nevertheless
true, that when a man gets too much
religion he is a good deal worse than
though he had none at ; II. So long
as he knows he ought to go to the
la ttomless pit ho can bo ersily
handled and utilized, but tfce very
miuute he ge‘s an impression that
heaven isn’t quite good enough for
him li» tries to ‘ bos.’’ the minister
and congregations and is bo conceited
and intolerable that n mysterious
dispensation ot Providence would
be received with resignation, if not
bailed as a “long felt want.”
Nature, at this s>,a*on of the yea r ,
is full of poetry. It seems as if the
very buds and flowers and plants
would sing for joy as they burst and
expand from their prison house inte
the fullness of free sunshine and pure
air, while the sweet birds contribute
their offerings with rich warblings,
which we listen to with such delight.
The soul expa id* with the unfolding
of the leaves and the blosB'uns, and at
this time, more than at any other sea¬
son. do we realize the absolu'e incon¬
venience of language and its incapac¬
ity to express the deepest and sub¬
limes! feelings which fill tho soul to
overflowing. Then, too, do we rae
ogniz-t the unlimited power and wis¬
dom of Him who governs and directs
the beautiful silent unfolding and de¬
veloping. That soul must be cum
pressed within a very narrow com
pass wh.ch does not, by faith, see ths
Almighty’s hand working grandly
and systematically throughout the
boundless universe.
As a gentleman and lady, resideut
of Macon, were returning Friday
night on the Gincinnati Southern
train, the lady took oft her diamond
ear-rings and pul them, in a glass of
water to wash them, Sne then took
a sup of ths water to wash her
month and threw the water and the
diamonds into the wash basin, and
they passed on through to the ground.
She at once realiz'd what she had
done. Her jewels, which had cost
her $250, were gore. The husband
sloptted to soaren for them, and the
bride finished tho bridal tour alone.
It now transpires that Cannon, who
attempted to make off with Mr. Payne's
horse at McDonough recently, was la¬
boring under a temporary aberration,
produced by drink, and was not con¬
scious of his action at the time. He im
magined that he w as being pursued by
enemies, and this hallucination promp¬
ted him to mount the horse and ride off
in his insane efforts at escape. When
Ins real condition became known, Mr.
Payne withdrew his warrant under which
he had b on arrested and lodged in jail,
and he was immediately set at liberty,
lie is rapidly recovering from the effects
of the wounds received on the day of
his capture. In responce to a telegram
his father arrived last. Sunday from
South Carolina, and had no difficulty in
establishing the previous good character
of Pis son. His home is in Greenville
county, 8. C.
