Before God and man, before the church

AIr. Editor:—Do you like to see the

like a flock of sheep and goats chewing

nights for you know not what kind oi
company they are keeping.

HOW TO KEEP THE- NEGRO
How to keep the negro laborers from
leaving the Lmu is a question which has
vexed Southern farmers ever since the
w tr. Many of the negroes ate totally
unreliable in the matter of contracts.
They wlU engage to WO rk for the year at
a glven rale o£ wageB> and then when
their labor is m0Bt needed and their
place not be supplied, they will quit and
j ea * e £ | ie unlucky farmer to extricate
himself from his dilerna as best he can.
A North Carolina farmer has struck
upon what seems to he the true solution
0 f t ], e difficulty. Acting on the belief
that the farm is not s diiciently attrac
five, he proposes to erect a huge dancing
hull on his farm, and at least once a
month he will have a free concert, with
music aud lemonade free aud plentiful
for all. Undoubtedly he has struck the
key to success. The humdrum of farm
is getting too moaotonus for the
average darkey, and as a coiiseqaeuc
they flock to town where they can see
and hear tho inspiring mns ; c of the
bands, j-u-t in the procession, go to
picnics, drink lemonade and soda watei
and have a good lime generally. Tho
attraction of free waterme’onr, and low
chicken roost) are, not strong on nigh to
overcome the allurements of city life
and the natu a! consequence is a never
ending gravit-tion to the towns. . The
North Carolina man has ovi lently stmek
the right string. The idea of a genuine
‘blow oat” at least once a mon.h will
prove an attraction greater than anything
that has yet been thought of.
