THE CONYERS WEEKLY |
'
THE SOLID SOUTH.
—*•
.
The following article is one which ap-.
pesred in thh "paper last week in an-'
swer to one in the Solid South of this
place which said as we have stated in
substance: ‘Col. Peek has in his pos-;
session a petition claiming to
the wishes of the majority or mass of our
>• r’V» ch
word for word. i
O.r clever brother of the Solid 8outh.
*g‘&£Si£i : "iS“ peop'e
ing to represent the mass of the
of his county ; such is false” and ‘ there j
is another petition asking that the p e*- :
ent Inca 1 Gw be repealed, and wo ’earn j
th*t Mr. Peek has declined to have any i
thing to do with it. If such is the case
he fails to represent the wishes of his
people at home. ” Now, as to the peti¬
tion ahich it is said Mr. P ek had in his
'osseggion (we doubt the correctness of
the assertion) failing representing B e ma
j.irity or mass of our people, it does no
gnch thing. It not only represents the
wishes of the Chritians but of every lover
of peace and order, and who will nay
they do not constitute the mass of the
people of Rockdale county ? The other
petion represents the wish is of those di~ j
rectly interested in the whisky trnfliic.
The charge or insinuation that this class
predominates in this county is an
insult to our people; one which our es
teemed contemporary can well afford to
throw in their teeth. As to our lepre
gentative, who ever know him to betray
a trust or dieregard the wishes or inter¬
ests of his people? Has he not always
proved true and faitnful? But we say
if lie knew a petition signed only by live
represented the best interest of the mass
of his people, he should support it in
prefferer.ee to one signed by a thousand.
Bill Peek was elected by our people as
their representative ; they knew he was
a Christian gentleman and a strong sup¬
porter of temperance, and if he fails to
(to his duty like a true man, (even tho
threats of ostracism stare him in the face,)
he will belie hia former record.
W« n ust confess that we are surprised
to see our contemporary take the stand
it has ; publishing articles so much at
variance in sentiment with the Church
and all that leans to the elevation ot Ihe
morais, intelligence and happiness of our
people. That the sentiment is condemn¬
ed by our people all know. Peek being
No doubt about Mr. re¬
membered in the future. As at the bal
lott box heretofore our people will glad¬
ly decide the issue in favor of temperance
and every step they may make will be
towards the extinction of whisky.
Now can anyono.find anything in this
article to call for such a torrent of person
al abuse as is contained in the following
short, but exceedingly hitter paragraph?
lt'ead this from the Solid South:
The scathing articles in the last issue
of the Weekly against us are fostered by
a foul and unfair principle. such They only are
filled with vituperations as can
issua from a man as the writer is known
to be. We are recklessly charg 'd by the
truant as advocating whiskey; this is
false to the cere, and the people of this
county know it. Any man that will cite
such an untrue statement agd«st his ”ld»
fellow for personal gain, petition, when will name
heads the whiskey stoop to
to anything.
Does it not look as if the authoj of the
above wa* anxious to get some pretext
for abusing call us—surely what we He wrote
did not for such slander! says
our article “was fostered by a foul exxd
principle," that it was “filled with
vituperations” Ac. Now as to-the prin¬
that actuated us, we do not think
any one can think it worse^thsn the one
that dictated the above paragraph and
as for "vituperations” can anything of
the sort be found in ourjarticle ? Do we
at all charge the Solid South with advo¬
cating whiskey? We say that their ar
itcle is at variance in sentiment with the
church &c., and is it not true? If nine
members out of ten, take the gentleman’s
own church , do not condemn it, we w ill
throw up the Bponge. We are again
accused of writing untruly for personal
gain. We deny the charge. We defy
anybody to find an untrue statement in
our article or point to one single instance
wherein we ever received one cent di¬
rectly or indirectly, fion our advocating
temperance. We were the very first to
espouse its cause in this county, and we
did quantities of work for which we have
never received one cent. The people of
this town snd couuty know our position
on this question and we know that no
amount of uncalled for abuse will change
our record. As to our signing Mr Petty’s
petition, we admit that it was rather in¬
discreet upon ourjpart- Mr.|Petty knrws
as does every one else, that we have no
sympathy whiskey traffic, and that wo
were only in favor of the old system in
preference to the present, inasmuch as
the revenue from the former was so
much greater and went farther toward*
the support of ’our municipality. As to
its complete expulsion or th i retail sys
tern, we are known by everyone to be
the earnest unflinebing advocate of the
former. We are, indeed, sorry that any
111 feelings hate been engendered over
this matter, for it is one upon which all
should be united for good, and we do
now, without fear ol any injury personal
or otherwise, without the counsel of
friend or foe, actuated only by a desire
to see unity, harmony and good prevail,
retract and recall anything that we may
have said or done to have insulted or
hurt the feelings of the gentleman of the
Solid South or of anyone else. Whether
others will do likewise or not we don’t
know; we can only speak for ourselves,
and since our motive in signing the Pet¬
ty petition has been misconstrued we as •
that our name be dropped from the list.
