We are for the old ticket and an appro
priation.
There are seven prisoners in Eastman

li e .Toe Brown, this is consoling.
W. II Bmvth has hee.u appointed post
master at Atlanta, in Mr. Conley's old
place.
The cry of educate the negro on the
white man s monev is getting weak. We
thought so
Col. L. M. Hi’!, of Washington, is
dead. lie was one of the wealthiest men
in the state.
The Democrats of Ohio are strong pro*
hihitionists, when it comes to prohibiting
Republican rule.
The Atlanta Journal is getting to lie r
genuine rival < f the Constitution. The
Journal is a good paper.
Dan Speer makes the boss treasurer o f
America. When yon want your money
yotl must call at she capitol.
The Macon Telegraph and Messenger
of last Sunday w as a most excellent paper.
It has-no superior in Georgia.
The last session of our Legis’ature only
Cost $100.000—not 10 cents a piece for
our population. A mere trifle.
It is now in order for Mr. Tilton to
come south on a lecturing t ur. We are
entitled to hear both sides of the case.
Twiggs county now has the stock law
by a majority of ninety, while Hart
county has fence by a majority of fi>e
h and red.
The Capitol Commission has gone to
work. They want a $800 000 house, with
Sejoo 000 margin. We guess the margin
is sufficient,
The Ninth District should devis some
means to have Mr. Candler left at, home
next term. He seems to be of small use;
in fact, an N. G
Congress commences on the 3d of De¬
cember next. Wo expect a lively time,
as all will want to make a record to send
them back next year.
It is onr private belief (fiat Boynton
will be room mated bv the Republican
party in this district. Whether lie will
accept or not we cannot say.
The Agricultural Bureau still survives
— the. grandest fraud the (ieople of Geo>.
gia ever liad to heir. The farmers should
pray for lightning to strike it.
Rockdale was the first c-ounty in the
state to adopt the stock law-, and if it
was left lo its opposers at tt'e election
carrying it they would sustain it.
We do hope that, the Agricultural Bu¬
reau will never live to see th’e new cap
itol completed. We do not want to see it
desecrated by a thing so nasty and so
corrupt.
Ex-Post master Conley has been indict
ed by the United States Grand Jury and
wilt be tried for fraud and embezzlement.
Jordan is a hard road to navel—in the
postoffice.
It is said that Major Bacon will cut ofT
his whiskers and will make Ihe race f< r
Governor in 1884. All the Major needs
to win is krr Joe Brown to stand behind
and twist his tail.
No man should he elected to the next
Legislature who is not in favor of putting
an extra tax on sheep and extending the
right, of 'lie noble Georgia dog. People
of Georgia don't forgot.
It is thought bv some that Hon. I,. F
Livingston, of Newton county, will bean
asp'rant for the Forty-ninth Congress.
Mr. Livingston, while he was not our
choice, has made ns a good senator, and
we bespeak for him high honors in the
futme.
TVs continue to receive copies of
“What I did say at Monteage and other
places.” AVed'wi’t care what you said,
doctor. AVe believe you unfit to repre¬
sent the people of tliis section and that
your argument and assertions are untrue.
The race for the nomination in the
Fifth District is going to be a hot one.
Atlanta has already four candidates in
ihe field, with Dan Dittman, Bill Hulsey,
Bill Bray and West End to hear from.
There fs no doubt about Atlanta, having
a man willing to accept.
The Macon Telegraph will make a
hard fight against Mr. Blount for Con
gress. The Telegraph may succeed in
defeating Mr. Blount, but it will never
succeed in placing in his seat a man as
worthv. Take Blount and Hammond
out of Congress and there is but little
left.
Prohibition is waxing hot in our sister
county of Henry, Politics have a big
hand in the matter. Hon. Charles T.
Zschry wid likely be a candidate for the
state senate next year, opposed by Col.
George Bryant and probably Col. Reagan.
Col- Reagan i.s a most ex cel la nt man and
is growing moie popular every day.
At Red Bluff, Marlboro county. 8. C ,
last week, some colored person gave
what he called a festival, and during the
evening a row occurred in which eight
or ten colored persons were shot, though
none it is thought, are seiiousty wound
ed. The reason several of them "as not
killed is said to be owing to the fact that
most of the negroes use twentv-f wo cal
lbre pistols.
OUR CITY.
Notwithstanding tire terrible drouth
which has spread nil over this section
and the shortest crops ever gathered, the
"otton receipts at tliis place wi'l reach
6 000 hales., rind the trade of our mer- i
chants has increased 10 per cent, over
hi. t, fall. Our city taxes, under the man
agoment of the present most excellent
Board of Conneilmen, have been reduced
from 25 to 16 cents, while real estate ha
advanced at least 25 percent. Our mer
chants to-day are on a firmer basis than
ever before. They are making more
monev, their business is more p’easant,
^ n( j j >roS j, ec t a arf > brighter than
pvpr with whisky driven from our
town in everv shape, we e. n invite to
our place th * best men of tlie county,
Women can come with their-husbands
and sons and know that they will not Tie

hard earnings w 11 not be spent for rum.
This is something that the lad'es appre

say to the public, come [ here to trade.
Here you can get the highest prices for
your pr, duce; here you can get cheap
goods, arid here your wives will not s^e
drunkenness nor your sons be exposed
to temptation.
STATE SEX \T 0 RHIIP.
While it is early to sav anything about
this question, perhaps it, is none too soon
for us to express otir feelings in. regard to ;
the coming contest. We want a good
man'to represent the district. We be |
'ieve everv countv can produce at, least
one good man. We know Rockdale can.
We want Rockdale to send delegates fa*
v ora hie to one of the best men. We want
his name presented, and we want the
rights of Rockdale pleaded for. If tire
Convention recognizes her right" and
nominates her man we will he most
thankful; if it does not. and will not give
it to us we are for submitting *0 'he ma
fojjitv and giving onr who'e, united and
undivided support to the nominee. We
want justice if weean gel it; if we cannot,
give us harmony at least.
Financially our county is now in a good
condition. The tax-s f- r- the expenses
of this year and outstanding debts are as
follows: For county purposes $4,163.4".
for jurors $1,784.32; for paupers, $1,
i 8 9 .s 5 -making a total of $7 >37 30. The
fund for the county purposes will pav for
the building} of ad hrid-.er; tfto Jones
property', which was purchased. S955;
two safes, $450; lawers’ fees, $200, and
about all other outstaying debts The
fund for jurors will pav them for this
year and $255 82 over. The pauper fund,
if all continue to draw, will lack $167 of
paying out. Our taxes this year are 5
per cent less. Next year, unless we have
unusual ill luck in having onr bridges
destroyed and public buildings burned,
our expenses will he much less and our
taxes very light. Our people should also
give in their property nearer to actual
value. That it is not given at more than
one-half its actual value there is no mis

drives away men of means and forces the
honest taxpayers to pay th^ taxes of the
dishonest. Give in your property at its
full value, and your taxes will be no more
than they are, hut less.
Nine years ago a Columbus hoy had
his foot crushed by an accident. In a
short time he was able to walk upon it,
and until about three monts ago it did
not trouble him in the least Then it
began to swell and give him much pain,
and on Tuesday it had reached enormous
proportions. The foot at Ihe ankle was
nearly as large as a man's body. Bis
condition wnu very critical, and it was
thought Tie could not live through the
day. Drs. Bullock, Battle and Crawford
w ere summoned, and the result of their
consulation w-as that they must ampu¬
tate the limb. The patient was put un¬
der the influence of chloroform and the
operaiion was successfully performed.
The limb was taken off just below the
Knee and it is probable that the hr y will
recover. During the nine years since
the accident tne hoy had been able to
atfen 1 to Iris duties and seemingly had
entirely recovered from the mishop.
At Cuthbert, last fall, an oat club was
organized, and a premium of two bush¬
els from each member was to be given
to the man making the greatest number
of bushels to the acre, and one bushel
from each to the man making the next
greatest number. The land has just been
carefully measured and the foliowing re
suit announced: John Mattox, Sq bus!i
els; Ishatu Weaver, 65 bushels; J. J. Al
fison, 63 bushels. After cutting th oats
Mr. Mattox put the same acre in cotton,
and, th.nigh the caterpillars greatly in¬
jured the yield it made half a bale.
AVe are willing to let the white man
and negro stand on an equal footing as
to public education and citizenship.
Let the poll tax of each go the support of
the state government, and let each have
a light to vote and hold office- The
property tax, less a certain per cent., to
go to free schools, the negro to be edu¬
cated by his money and the white man
by his. This will put all on an equal
footing Don’t tax the white man's prop
ert v to educate the negro’s children.
