A WALTON COUNTY MURDERER
IN LIMBO.
I Just one year agd to-day one bf the
• most horrible murders ever nerpetrated
W IS committed ill this county, some
three miles below Social Circle, near the
resi(Jence of Mr . p c bert J. Gr.en. Henry
CuJi( . y ani] p OWpll Reef ] were rivals,
Both were seeking the affections of Car
oline Harris, a notoriously lowed mulatto
woman. The two men met at her house
on the night on tlie 17th < f October and
slept together. About, sun up the next
morning, while Reed wm still asleep.
Curry got up. and with an axe struck
him three heavy 7 blows on the head,
each lick sending the axe up to its eye
into the skull of the sleeping negro.
Reed died and Curry made his escape.
He had threatened Hie life of another
negro man, and it was through this man
man that Sheriff Ammons worked in
order to capture Curry. A few weeks
ago Curry came to Atlanta, and sent for
the woman, Caroline Harris, to join him
there. The Sheriff was notified of her
departure and followed her to Altanta.
□Curry heard of the Sheiff’s presence
and skipped out. A negra woman in
Atlanta, who knew of Curry’s flight and
his new place of abode, was lodged in the
city prison for stealing. She told the of
cers if they would help her to get out of
prison she would tell them something
'hey wanted to know. By close ques¬
tioning they found out she knew where
Henry Curry was. Sheriff Ammons was
sent for and the stealing ease was made
up, and the woman to'd him that Curry
was at Darlington, South Carolina. The
sheriff of that county was telegraphed to
arrest Him, which was promptly done.
A requisition wks obtained for him and
he was promptly and safely escorted to
jail in Monro by Sheriff Ammons. At
Madison, Rutledge and Social Circle,
large crowds of negroes, who knew of
his terrible crime, surrounded the sheriff
and his prisoner, and were loud in their
abuse of the guilty mttn and pqually loud
in their praises of the faithful officer,
who has thus run down and c.iught one
of the worst criminals. One old negro
asked for the privilege of tying the knot
around his neck.
“Curry confesses his guilt to every one.
He says he hit him shree licks with the
axe while he was asleep, hut says Reed
had threatened to kill him, and he
thought the best time.to kill him was
while he was asleep. He pleads self-be
fense, but he will never induce twelve
jurors of Walton county to say by their
verdict that am tiling less than twenty
minutes suspension by the neck shall be
the penalty for such a brutal crime.
Jealousy caused this crime, and its hor¬
rible details only show to what depths a
depraved negro will go in order to wreak
his revenge.
TIIE CROW AND THE FOX.
(La PortfAiXE.)
A crow, perched on a tree one day,
Held in his beak so-ne fragrant cheese;
Lir Reynold, passing by that way.
Conceived his compliment to please.
“Fair dav unto my lord, Crow quail!
How well you look! I do avow;
Without, a thought of guile, I sav,
If that your voice hut equalled now
Your plume of all the feathered throng,
You were the rarest bird of song!”
The crow blushed like a girl of nine
Teen years now, if I so may speak;
To show his voice was full as fine,
For judge so just, stretched Wide his
beak.
The cheese which fell, with unconcern
The fox politely raised, and said:
“The lesson, sir, you here may learn
Is worth the cheese,” and, bowing, fled.
LaFontaine draws a moral. I
Leave that to you; for I opine'.
Reader, that it may well apply
To all from ninety years to nine.
XotoS.
Notice.
Having had my saw mill burned and
needing money to have it replaced, I
e rnestly ask all who are due me money
to come forward and make settlements
with me. I need the money, and I ask
you to come forward afld see me at once.
Yours, Ac.,
a. N. Plunkett.
