The Tricks ol Clever Siniurglcra—An In¬

[From the New York Tribune.]
“The trouble about Mr. Irving’s prop

otlur’day, “reminds under me of notice a curious
ease which came my some
few rears ago. I was an examiner in
those days and cultivated that sixth
sen-e, which all capable examiners ac

win iuer or not the homeward-bound
traveler is trying to‘beat’ the Govern¬
ment. One day my attention was called
to a remarkably well dressed and rather
attractive-looking woman who arrived
on a Cunarder. No. sir ! I am a mar¬
ried man and it was not her looks, as you
suggest, but her trunks which attracted
me. They were numerous and capacious
and when opened displayed garment
after garment of the richest materials
and most fashionable design. To my
mute glance of astonishment at her dec¬
laration that no dutiable articles were
among them she candy took the ground
from beneath my feet by saying wardrobe that she
was an actress and her was,
therefore, exempt from duty as ‘tools
of trade.’ I must confess that I still felt
dubious, but my doubts were dissipated
when, with much indignation at my re¬
peated hints, she produced a contract
signed by one of the leading New York
managers engaging her for a season of
forty eonid weeks. I apologized as well iudig- ns I
and she departed with an
nant whirl of her petticoats.
“That night I chanced to be standing
in the lobby of tlie theater owned by
the manager whose signature was at the
bottom of the contract I had scanned
in the morning. ‘Fine-looking woman,
your new actress,’said T. ‘What new
actress?’ said ho. ‘Why, Miss---
said I, mentioning tlie name of the giving lady
with the trunks. ‘What are you
Ms?’ retorted (lie manager. ‘I never
heard the name in my life.’ I turned
hot and cold by turns for a humiliating
sense of the plan by which I had been
done for flashed across me. I went be¬
hind the scenes and saw the manager’s
partner to make sure, and then I started

means I used to obtain my ends, for
those are official secrets; it is enough
to say that shortly after midnight I had
all the goods in the custody of one of
my men and my lady herself safe under
lock and key. She was one of the lead¬
ing dressmakers of this city and would
have netted by her clever little scheme
a good many hundred dollars if it had
only worked—but it didn’t, so she got
six months and a fine of $5,000 instead.
She didn’t pay the tine because she
couldn’t, but she was ruined all the
same and has since left New York.
“A man gets pretty sharp, but we slip
up occasionally. For instance, wo re¬
ceived word from Europe about two
years ago description that a man£ of whom given, an would ac¬
curate was
leave England on a certain steamer and
probably would attempt to smuggle a
large quantity of diamonds over here
with him. He would travel with a fe¬
male companion, we were told, but her
description was not sent to us. The
case was one which promised good down re¬
sults, so I and an inspector boarded went the
on the revenue cutter and
ship at quarantine as private citizens.
We soon spotted our man and kept an
oye on him and watched all his move¬
ments and tho movements of the fair¬
haired damsel whose shawls he was
carrying, as a oat watcheB a mouse.
When wo landed every article was
turned out of his trunks and closely ex¬
amined. The trunks themselves were
measured and prodded and tapped and oi
still no diamonds appeared. In Biblical spite
his struggles aud far from
language ho himself was searched in the
most thorough manner. Then came the
lady’s turn and she was put through
precisely tho same process with the same
nngratifyingresults,.though the language
she used if as pointed as his was less
strongly compounded. As no diamonds
or anything else of a dutiable nature
was found we had to let the pair go,
though I was convinced that in some in¬
scrutable mntitier he had succeeded in
hoodwinking us. So indeed it turned
oat. Wo had done all we could and save
for a trifling error, as wo afterward dis¬
covered, would have prevented jewels
worth $85,000 coming into this country
free of duty.” ?”
“What was the error

his premises. “What are you doiug
