These two items from the Atlan¬
ta Journal, a paper with the peo¬
ple’s interest, will doubtless throw
some light upon the subject:
“The two or three papers in
Georgia that are advocating the re¬
peal ot the federal internal revenue
Jaws, and the assumption by the
several states of the taxation oi
whiskey manufacture, are referred
to the constitution of the State of
Georgia, which provides that all
taxes shall he levied ad {valorem.
This would preclude the levying
by the state of Georgia ofa specific
tax on whisky, and would prevent
the adoption by tho state of any
inch system as that which the gen¬
eral government now has.
‘‘We said tho other day that, tho
repeal of the whiskey tax could
hardly he considered “a question,”
because it did not come within the
range of probability.” The Wash
ington reporter of our neighbor, the
Constitution, admits this in his
dispatch of Saturday, in which he
•nys “the repeal of the tax on whis
ky can now hardly be considered a
practicable question.” Y'et some
parties in Georgia are striving
strenuously to make this an issue
in state politics. There must be
something unievealed behind this
effort.
The Augusta Chronicle goes for
Joseph E. Brown in this style:
“Senator Brown no doubt thinks
more highly of the moonshiners
than he does of the other people of
Georgia, hut it is non-sense for him
to pretend to opposo the internal
revenue tax on whisky in the moon¬
shine interest. What ho really
wants is to have the tariff taxes re
tained on iron and coal. Thero is
no moonshine in that. “Joey B.
is devilish sly.”
The Augusta Chronicle has these
complimentary words about our
immediote congressman : “We re¬
peat, that Hon. John D. Stewart of
the Fifth Georgia district, is on the
right line, llis bills—the one to
increase the accommodation capi¬
tal of national banks and tho other
to ipake real estate collateral at na¬
tional banks—should be enacted
into law. We trust that Judge
Stewart will press these bills with
all the earnestness and ability at
bis command. Suffice it to say,
that Judge Stewart lacks neither
earnestness nor ability, Practical
legislation is what this country
needs.
Captain A. O. Bacon has boen
unsuccessful in his many attempts
to become governor of Georgia.
Me has plumed his wings for an¬
other flight but in a different direc¬
tion. He has written a long letter
to a number of provincial Georgia
democrats who are protectionists,
on the subject of the repeal of the
internal revenue laws. He favors
the repeal and takes several col¬
umn? of the papers in which to
at ate his reasons. He might have
coudensed them into one aud in
these words “I want to wear Col¬
quitt’s seuatoiial robos.” Time
will show that this is fact.
The confirmation of Mr. Lamar
by the senate is a triumph of the
peaceful and progressive element of
the country over the loud-mouthed
wreckers who have hoisted the
bloody shirt-and are bent on in¬
volving the country in a renewal
of the sectional hatred which has
long since been buried by the true
patriots of both sections.
The report, if true, that General
Longstreet is in abject poverty is
distressing. Let Georgians come
to his leseue.

Early Sunday morning Joel
Weeks, a white butcher, went to
his home, in Augusta, and cruelly
abused bis wife. Mrs. Henera, the
mother of Mrs. Weeks, tried to get
out of the door to call for help
while Weeks was chasing Iris wife
around the house with a drawn ax.
Seeing Mrs. Weeks trying to get
out, Weeks struck her on the fore¬
head with the blade of the «x and
inflicted a ghastly wound, from
which the poor woman will die.
The issue upon which the next
Georgia Senator is to be elected is
the repeal of the internal revenue
tax. This tax is less burdensome
than the tariff on clothing, shoes,
machinery, farming implements
and other indispensably necessary
articles of common use.
At Columbia, 8. G'., Saturday,
Rev. W. B. Shaw, a Baptist minis¬
ter who was unbalanced by his en¬
thusiasm on the subject of sanctifi¬
cation, attempted to commit suicide
by cutting his throat. He kneeled
over A tub of water, uttered a wild
prayer and plunged a knife into bis
throat. The wound will probably
prove fatal.
Here is the best exposition of the
“Cracker’s” protection cartoon. It
is by the Albany News: “The Geor
gia Cracker represents Joe Brown
as a Sampson of protection pro¬
clivities tearing down the temple of
the Philistine free traders. A fit
representation of blind power work¬
ing its own destruction.
On Monday forty members of the
"ew York Cotton Exchange were
asked for their estimates on the
current crop of cotton. The aver¬
age estimate was 6,600,000 bales, or
320,000 bales more than the gov¬
ernment bureau’s estimate.
Division of labor has been carri¬
ed to such perfection in this coun¬
try that it is now possible, so it is
said, to make a complete sewing
machine in a minute or sixty in
an hour, a reaper every fifteen min¬
utes, a locomotive in a day, and 300
watches in the same time.
A singular phenomenon is a
“mineral light” which has recently
made its appearance near Mineral
Bluff, in Fannin county, The
ight is liquescent and bright, and
moves gp and down the mountain.
The older inhabitants of tho settle-'
ment 6ay it indicates the presence
of a valuable mine of some kind.
With the Emporer of Germany
suffering from catarrh of the bow¬
els, and the Crown Prince likely to
pass away nt any time, Germans
are in a state of great uncertainty
and uneasiness. The taking off of
a good ruler and a competent hair
at about tho same time Would be a
great blow to Germany.
