THE WEEKLY, IR. J. GUINN, -EDITOR AND PROPRIETOR $1,25 PER ANNUM. Entered at the Conyers Post Office as second class mail matter. Advertising- rates made known on Demand, -m Job Work Neatly and Promptly Executed. Over 1 000 tons of cotton seed were shipped from Covington dur¬ ing the past fall. Speaker Carlisle ha* notified the committees in Atlanta and Macon that he cannot come to Georgia at this time. ft Capt. C. P. Crawford of Milledge ville writes a communication to the Macon Telegraph urging the neces¬ sity of relieving the Supreme Court Judges of some of their bur¬ dens, by dividing the state i*to two judicial departments, with an ap¬ pelate court in each and with ap¬ peal to the highest court. , Some desperate life convicts in the Dade coal mines were foiled the other day in a deep laid and vil¬ lainous scheme to murder the guards and escape. It was ex¬ tremely fortunate that the discov¬ ery was made in time, as the loss of lile would doubtless have been terrible. Atlanta’s new directory gives her 72,000 inhabitants. The directory states that there are in Atlanta ten chartered and private banks, with an aggregate capital of $2,225,000; there are 140 miles of streets, and 190 separate streets, 240 miles 01 sidewalks, sixty of which are pav¬ ed and curbed. There are 151,000 feet of sewerage, The line dividing the red and gray lands in Oglethorpe county is very distinct. Last week Alex Glenn ditched out his spring branch, and for several hundred yards one bank of the ditch is of one quality of soil and the other hank of the other. The difference in vegetation growing on these two soils is easily detected. The following are the state elec¬ tions that will be held this year prior to the great presidential con¬ test and the many congressional elections in November : Alabama, August 6; Aikausas, September 3; Georgia, October 3; Maine, Sep¬ tember 10; Oregon, June 4 ; Louis¬ iana, April 17; Vermont, Septem¬ ber 4. Maine, Oregon and Ver¬ mont will elect congressmen on the same date as their state elections. All the other states will elect con¬ gressmen in November. Dr. T. O. Powell and Hon. R. N. Lamar, of Milledgeville, are on the committee appointed by the last legislature to consider the advisa¬ bility 01 establishing an inebriate asylum. The committee is compo¬ sed of distinguished gentlemen from different parts of the state, and is a very able and conscientious body of men. Dr. Powell, who is one of the best authorities on tho subject in the state, thinks the state should no longer delay in preparing a training school for weak minded and idiotic children. The Military Company now have their arms and are in splendid fix. Doubtless they will parade one day during court week. This reminds us that on Wednesday the 22d there will be an entertainment for the benefit of the Volunteers. It will be a most interesting and ei - joyable occasion. The young men have in this movement displayed the proper spirit of enterprise and if encouraged by the citizens prop¬ erly they will make the company an honor to the town and county, To attend this entertainment be encouraging the boys. It will not be a donation by any moans to pay the 25 cents admission, for it is positively certain that the enter toinment will be well worth the money expended.
