Congress is thinking of appropri¬
ating $1,000,000 a year to the sup¬
port of the militia in the several
States. Wli ether Congress does
this or not, Georgia ought to do her
duty tothe volunteer soldiery of this
State.
The cholera is still ravaging the
cities of Chili. Unless the greatest
precautions are used, the dreadful
disease may effect a lodgment in
Ihe United States tbs summer.
The escape last year whs narrow.
Ex-Governor Bullock is sugges.
ted by some northern papers for
vice-president on the republican
ticket, but it may be safely said,
and to his credit, that he cannot
get the nomination. His recent let¬
ters to the New York Press show
him to be disqualified for waving
the bloody shirt.
The anniversity meeting of the
Y. M. C. A. of Macon last week was
the most enthusiastic ever held.
Editor Richardson of the Telegraph
delivesed the address. Over eleven
hundred dollars were subscribed by
the audience. The membership at
Macon numbers 44(5, the largest in
the state.
In the opinion oftlie Washington
correspondent of the Boston Post
Mr. Randall’s tariff bill will not get
fifty' votes from tlie Republicans
nor u dozen from the Democrats.
Mr. Randall is, of course, aware of
this fact. His bill was not intro¬
duced with tlie faintest hope that
it would pass. It is only the latest
move in the game of obstruction,
which Sir, Randall has played for
years in the interest of the present
tariff.
Mr. Randall's little bill projtoses
to double tbe tax on cotton ties and
increase tbe tax on bagging. It
would wow be in order for the At¬
lanta Constitution to read him a
certain editorial which appeared in
its columns of 1883, and said that
“h* voted tj double the tax on cot¬
ton tics, so that the farmers of the
south should be compelled to pay
a large proportion of their earnings
into the pockets of a few Pennsyl¬
vania manufacturers.”
Mnssachusetts is not 11 very en¬
thusiastic Blaine State, if the opin¬
ions of her legislators are to be ac¬
cepted ns an indication, but she is
solid for Cleveland. Oftlie Repub¬
lican members who were asked for
t heir preferences only half were for
Blaine. Among the Democrats
there was not n dissenting voice
against Cleveland. Massachusetts
may cover herself with glory next
fall. Put your ear to tlie ground
and yovi will hear rumblings in that
direction.
\Ve are not a friend to tbe mo¬
nopolists. So far are we irom be¬
ing a friend to them that we would
rejoice to see them hurled into ob¬
livion. But we like to see justice
done even to a heartless corpora¬
tion and consequently wo raise our
voice against tbe proposed action of
tbe Railroad Commission of Geor¬
gia in cutting the passenger rates
from three to two and one-half
cents per mile on all tbe roads of
the state- We do not believe this
is right. The fare on r.v’roads is
cheap enough in proportion to oth¬
er things. Within tbe last ten
years passenger fare has been r< -
duced from 5 to 3 cents per mile.
At tbe present rate it is cheaper L>
ride than walk. Iloiv much
er does any one want it.
all other icasons we cannot
where there is any justice in mak
ing a reduction in rates already’ low
enough to give general satisfaction
, to the people.
The Delisthtf ul Liquid Laxative.
Syrup of Figs is a most agreeable
and valuable family remedy, as it
is easily taken by old and young,
and is prompt and effective in cur¬
ing Habitual Constipatation and
the many ills depending on a weak
or inactive condition of the Kid¬
neys, Liver, and Bowels. It acts
gently, strengthens the organs on
which it acts, and awakens them to
a healthy activity. For tale by Dr.
W. II. Lee & Son.
