The colored republicans of the
tenth district are in favor of a pro¬
tective tariff They have a direct
interest in the of wool.
The argument of the protection¬
ists is that the poor are poor, and it
does not matter how much you op¬
press them.
At Griffin the entire amount
needed ($100,000) has been sub¬
scribed to the new cotton mill
and woik will commence, on the
building in the next two or three
weeks.
_
Two Georgians are mention¬
ed ns possible successors of Chief
Justice Waite. One is Hon. F. J.
Hammond of Atlanta and the oth¬
er is Minister to Russia, Gen. Alex¬
ander R. Lawton.
Stradding is no longer heroic.
The man who thinks getting into
office is the aim and end of parties
will have to saw wood for cold meat
while we have a contention of prin¬
ciples.
Judge Emory Speer has written
a law book entitled “The Removal
of Causes,” and embraces both civil
and criminal cases. The terror to
most criminals is not how to re¬
move the causes but the conse¬
quences.
_
How would it suit for all tho old
war horses to again enter (he race?
Wouldn’t it he fun? Such another
tightening of the reins and champ¬
ing of the bits. The old song runs,
“There’s sugar in the gourd, and
the way to get the sugar out is to
roll the gourd about.’ This last
line is poetry._
Congressman Clements is said to
he the richest man in congress from
Georgia. He is worth'll bout $100,
000. Col. Blount stands next.
Judge Stewart is worth about $30,
(XX). Capt. Carlton is worth about
$20,000. The remaining congress¬
men are living comfortably off of
their salaries.
For years before and after the
war the section of country which
attracted the most attention was
the great and growing West.
“♦Tcstward the star of empire takes
its course,” was a familiar and fa¬
vorite expression. It'D not heard
quite so frequently now. This ex¬
pression is taking its place ^South¬
ward the star of empire takes its
course.”
Mr. Pridgins, an old and respected
preacher, residing near High Shoals,
Ga., has decided to preach his own
funeral sermon, and has set for the
day the second Sunday in April
Ha will have a coffin made and will
stand by it when lie preaches. He
will tell the story of his life, and
pay appropriate tributes to his vir¬
tues and character. He invites
everybody, the press especially, to
be present. Mr. Pridgins is very
popular, a clearheaded and well
informed man.
The Ph'ladelplua Record advan¬
ces a novel idea. It is that each
tax-burdened person of this coun¬
try send to his congressman a pos¬
tal card containing these words*
“Dear Sir—I am tired of paying my
•hare of $155^00(^060 that the gov¬
ernment docs not need. Please
vote to cut off unnecessary tariff
taxation. Give ns free lumber. saR,
coal, wool, jute, iron ore. tin plates,
and cheaper food and clothing
Keep the taxes on whisky and to¬
bacco to pay pensions and interest.’
If every person who favors tariff re¬
form were to write something like
the above to his congressman, there
would be quite a heavy mail in
Washington for some time, and sev¬
eral additional clerks would have
to be employed.
The DaLshtfuI L!jj cl Laxative.
Syrup of Figs is a most agreeable
and valuable family remedy, as it
is easily taken by old and young,
and is prompt and effective in cur
ing Habitual Constipatation and
the many ills depending on a weak
or inactive condition of the Kid¬
neys, Liver, and Bowels, It acts
gently, strengthens the organs on
which it acts, and awakens them to
a healthy activity. For sale by Dr.
W. II. Lee & Son.
