Executed.
Rosooe Conkiing died in 'New
Tork’last Tuesday. He was one
republican who had the confidence
*<>f both parties of all sections of the
-country. And as it has been said
rthis is the highest tribute that -etui
'•be paid him.
The next legislature will’ be one
<of the most important ever held in
the state. The State Road lease
and the betterment question will ho
one of the important question*: to
be acted upon. One United States
senator, two judges of the 'Suprcsne
Court and about half the judges
and solicitors in the state are to be
elected,
France lias too biggest national
debt in the world. It amounts to
^7,000,000,0(X), or more than'five
times as much as the debt of: the
United States. And yet a large
pai tv in France would like to -ee
Boulanger president. Ins election.
would probably mean war, and
war would bring banki uptcy, if not
defeat. It is a very serious ques¬
tion whether France can afford to 1
fool with l>i>uIaneer.
Gen. Toombs’ monument, says
<he ’Washington Chronicle, will be
ereotefl by the middle of next week.
It will be-a'imiidsomO shaft twenty
live feet high .-made from Italian
marble. It "is perfectly plain in de¬
sign with no inscription except the
names of Gen. mil Mrs. Toombs
with the dates of their bbii'th and
, death.
‘ Sam Jones and Sam Small are
Industrious and potential ns'revi
valists, and the prospects arc that
they will be instrumental in inau¬
gurating a vigoious prohibition
party in the state, They are Sit
least shaping thing to this end, so
it appears. But the question
naturally comes up, are they
more zealous or fanatical than wise?
What good will a prohibition party
do from a purely political stand¬
point? It gives some men office
and a deal of prominence ivo are
leady to admit, but isn’t it a fact
tnadc plain and established by
years that prohibition and politics
are as foreign and unadaptable in
their natures and ends as water and
oil? No one will deny that polities
has invariably worked to the inju¬
ry of prohibition on mil occasions
where it lias been injected. This
being so, it appears strange that so
many .recognieed conservative and
-fair minded men will look with any
aiegree of allowance upon -wild fan
ciestthat will result finally in cram¬
ping individuals as well' as disen
gnnizing.political parties. But after
all tins may be the chief end desir¬
ed. If it be well enough to
publicly rebuke this move in its re¬
cipiency. As itgoes, if it goes at
all, it will increase in volume and
•corruption,until it becomes a dan
gerous and threatening power, die
taring and demanding terms that
may not be for the peace, happiness
or safely of the government. It is
easv to see how the republicans
.north and south will grasp with
• eagerness and encourage with .loud
whoops any measure that will give
them strength either directly or by
crippling democratic principles.
The union of the prohibitionists
and even in this state
would place the democratic party
in an attitude of uncertainty inse¬
curity. And the republicans recog¬
nizing this are not slow to express
their sympathy and lend their sup¬
port to. tire movement. It means
meat to them and the refuse to
* their opponents- But we are for
prohibition and at the same time
we are for the old iron ribbed dem¬
ocracy, which guarantees safety anc
security to us as individuals and
to our government.
