So far as we are able to ascertain
Judge Stewart will be returned to
congress without opposition, In
the opinion of the people through¬
out the country—and the people's
verdict is usually fair and impar¬
tial—Judge Stewart has made a
most accept able and able congross
man. It is true no great emergen
cv has arisen by which lie could
exhibit bis depth and display his
talents, and gain for himself a na
tionnl reputation and become in so
short a time the perfect idol of his
district. Could this be secured it
might of itself tickle the pride of
his constituents and lend a deal of
glory to our congressman, but the
interests of the whole people, which
is the interests of the government,
demand hard, tireless and painsta¬
king work. For this Judge Stew¬
art is amply equipped both by 11a
ture and training. Ha is of stout
build and scholarly turn of mind,
able to take care of himself and his
constituents in any assembly. So
he may bo put down as one of our
foremost legislators. Possibly he
is not so gasy as Ingalls, hutit^is
probable he is safer and more brainy
rendering his services greater and
more effective to the government.
The great congressman, Hie one
who most benefits his country, is
tho If this
be true then that a congressman’s
greatness is measured by bis work
even Judge Stewart’s enemies will
admit that he is entitled to the, fore¬
most rank of legislators, for his eye
is always searching and bis mind
investigating. Beyond all this be
knows the people, their wants, their
interests and is brave enough at all
times to stand up boldly for them.
In every station of life lie has prov¬
ed himself worthy, whether as sol
d e •, as mayor of Griffin, as county
jud ;e of Spalding, as legislator of
Spalding, as judge of Flint Circuit,
as congressman—in each and all
these honored positions he has de¬
ported himself with such dignity
and fairness, such manliness and
wisdom as to gain the almost un¬
limited confidence of the people. In
his present position, the most hon¬
ored of his life, he is ranking with
the foremost statesmen of the coun¬
try. Personally he is very popular
at home and abroad, affable in ad'
dress and kind in disposition, and
possessing in a remarkable degree
the happy faculty of most groat
men of winning people and holding
their confidence and friendship. In
liis bosom beats a heart as big and
warm as ever throbbed in a human
breast. He loves and serves his
friends, and bis great heart will not
allow him to harbor unkind feel¬
ings toward even an avowed enemy.
He is such a man as will always be
fair, just and honorable in every
transaction, challenging the respect
of equals and admiration or inferi¬
ors. And the highest compliment
to him is that he has been faithful
and true to every trust and recre¬
ant to no duty. And no broader
basis than this could be erected up¬
on which to rest his greatness.
It is now in order for the Consti¬
tution to send out another batch of
circular letters and provoke tariff
expressions from leading citizens in
the different counties of the state.
If our memory serves us a rigid the
state through her prominent coun¬
ty politicians was committed some
mouths ago to protection—that is,
cheap liquor and tobacco. Possi¬
bly the Constitution had instructed
special makers.
Samuel J. Tilden’s wine cellar is
supposed to be worth $20,000.
