Cleveland has been endorsed by
the democratic convention of New
York with but 5 dissenting votes.
Bob Taylor has been renominat¬
ed as a candidate for governor by
the democrats of Tennessee.
Judge Stewart, our able and pop¬
ular congressman, has recently sent
the Rockdale Library 23 volumes
containing accurate accounts of the
great geological surveys made by
and under the direction of the TJ.
S. government. Forlhis handsome
donation the Judge will please ac
cept the grateful thanks of the
members of the Rockdale Library.
A practical revivalist requested
all in the congregation who paid
their debts to rise. The rising was
general After they bad taken
their seats, a call was made for
those who d dn’t pay their debts
and one eoliiary individual arose,
and explained that, he was the edi¬
tor, and could not pay because the
congregation were owing him their
subscriptions.
The Georgia delegation to the
National Democratic convention
will leave Atlanta on the morning
of Sunday, June 3d, in a special
Pullman car, and will arrive in St.
Louis on the fallowing morning,
the day before the convention will
meet. Fare for the round trip will
be $17.55 and sleeping car berths
$4. The route will be by the Wes¬
tern and Atlantic, and Louisville
and Nashville railroads.
The State Convention in Atlanta
has passed off quietly. Hoke
Smith was chairman and resolu¬
tions fully endorsing Cleveland and
Colquitt were unanimously passed.
Albert Cox, Pope Barrow, DuBig
non and Dessau were elected as del
egates from the state at large. Em¬
mett Womack and Jack J. Spald¬
ing were elected delegates from this
district, with Col. C. T. Zachry and
M. A. Candler as alternates.
Friday’s Picnic.
Never in the history of Conyers
picnics has there been such a splen¬
did affair as took place last Friday
at the Stewart Paper Mills. From
early morn to noon a constant
stream of buggies, wagons and mot
men poured into the beautiful
grounds around the selected place.
Our estimate places the crowd at
1,500. Never have we seen a pic¬
nic party so perfectly contented or
happy. Every body seemed to be
having a jolly big t ime. The boys
and girls romped, the young ladies
and young gentlemen sought some
quiet shady nook to whisper the
soft sweet words of love. The old
people chatted happily among
themselves. The old maids and
bachelors drew nigh each other—
in fact, the woods rang with merri¬
ment and pleasure.
The basket dinners spread almost
over the entire bill were never sur¬
passed in excellence or quantity.
We heard one gentleman remark
that there was enough to cat on
the grounds to feed every individ¬
ual in the county. You may put
this in your hat, that whenever the
women are called upon they do
their part well.
It was gratifying to notice that
not a single one was under the in¬
fluence of whisky. Such a picnic
fifteen years ago would have been
marred by several cases of drunk
tnr, C 3s. It is pleasing to note the
contrast. May our growth in mor¬
ality be as marked for th.i next fif
teen years as it has been for the
past.
The grand success of this picnic
will put union picnics in favor for
the future.
