Executive Committee,
The executive committee of the
fifth congressional district met
Monday at 12 o’clock at the law of¬
fice of Calhoun, King & Spalding,
in the Gate City bank building, At¬
lanta.
There were present Mr. W. L
Wa Person, of Clayton county,
chairman ; Mr. Jack .J. Spalding of
Fulton, secretary; Mr. T. Spear¬
man, of Walton ; Mr. C. P. Bowen,
of Douglas; Mr. W. T. Dickenof
Henry ; Mr. N. M. Collins of Spald¬
ing; Mr, R. J. Guinn , proxy, for
Mr. J. 1. Coleman, of Rockdale;
Mr. 0. L. Porter of Newton, and
Mr. J. W. Graham of Fayette,
DeKalb and Campbell counties
were not represented.
On motion of Mr. Spearman, the
following resolutions were unani¬
mously adopted:
Resolved 1. That a convention be
held in the city court room at At¬
lanta, Ga., on Wednesday, the 11th
of July, 1888, at 12-o’clock m. to
nominate a democratic candidate
for congress in this, the fifth con¬
gressional district.
2. That each county be entitled
in said convention to two delegates
for each member it has in the legis¬
lature.
3. We recommend that the coun¬
ties of the distiict choose their-dol
egates on Tuesday, the 3d of July,
1888, by primary election.
4. That the democratic papers of
this district ho requested to publish
these resolutions.
Gov. Gordon, Gen. Lewis, and
one or two others, are considering
the matter of having a joint meet¬
ing of all the -Confederates and
Federals of Atlanta, at an early
date, to make arrangements for an
excursion to Gettysburg, Pa., early
in July, where a reunion cf the
“Blue and Gray’ is to he held, and
Gen. Longstreet has already agreed
to speak on that occasion, and Gen
Gordon is also expected to make,
an address in ease he can attend the
minion.
Next Tuesday, June 5th, the na¬
tional democratic convention will
assemble at St. Louis. President
Cleveland, we have not a doubt,
will be re-nominated by acclama¬
tion. An Indiana man will he put
on the ticket with Cleveland, it is
now believed. At any rate, the
candidate for the vice-presidency
will he a western man.
The Washington correspondent
of the Courier-Journal says: “One
thing is dead sure, and that is that
the Mills bill will pass the house
substantially as it came from the
ways and means committee, and
that, too. before the month of June
rolls out.
The boom of each republican
candidate for president, according
to newspaper report, is “growing
bigger daily.” Most of them will
soon be so big that they will burst.
The defeated protectionists of
this state think that democratic
harmony is better than strife. As
one we tumble to this argument.
The season for campaign slanders
has come. Some one has staited
the story that President Cleveland
smokes cigarette
The southern general assembly
of the Presbyterian church sat down
mightily on Dr. Woodrow and his
little idea of evolution.
It is now thought that Cleveland
and Thurman will constitute the
democrat ic presidential n ominees.
It is reported that R. D. Locke
will be th j republican candidate for
governor of thu* state.
