Executive Committee’s Action.
At a meeting of tbe democratic
executive committee yesteiday a
call was made fora mass meeting
of the democratic party of Rock¬
dale county on the 30th of June at
2 o’clock p. m. at the courthouse
to select two delegates and two al¬
ternates to attend the congressional
convention to be held in Atlanta on
the 11th of July, and the same
number of delegates and alternates
to the senatorial convention of this
district.
And also called a primary elec¬
tion of the democratic party of
said county on Saturday July 21st
at the several precints of the coun¬
ty to select a candidate for the low¬
er house of the next general assem¬
bly, said election to be governed by
the rules heretofore adopted by the
executive committee, which will
appear hereafter.
J. N. Glenn, Ch. Ex. Com.
Conyers, Ga., June 14th 1888.
The bagging manufacturers" are
trying to convince the Senate that
the Southern farmer buys their
product as bagging and sells it as
cotton, with a resulting profit of
(Several cents a pound. The major¬
ity of the Senate is very easy to
convince when a manufacturer is
giving reasons why a duty should
be retained, but the yublie knows
that in the market where two thirds
of the cotton crop is sold the weight
of bagging and ties is deducted and
the price paid is for net cotton.
There is not much profit for the
farmer in the transaction.
The wonderful extent to which
immigration to this country has
reached is shown in the fact that in
1820 there were but 8,000 arrivals,
while "this year will show nearly one
million. The total immigration to
this country since 1820 amounts to
nearly 15.000,000 people, and the
eftect of this wonderful foreign in¬
crease on our population lias been
as great on ourselves as 011 them,
in that many of our institutions
have been made to conform largely
to their ideas, and [others are still
undergoing change in that direct¬
ion.
No crape was worn at the funeral
